Dabo Swinney's last transfer portal hurdle is upon him, whether or not he realizes it

Win or lose, Dabo Swinney continues to be stubborn in the face of something so painfully obvious.

Six games into the season, and Clemson's offensive identity has been well-established. In order to win games, it must dictate terms at the line of scrimmage with a relentless rushing attack. This is because as soon as this team abandons the run, it gets into trouble. With Tait Reynolds stagnating at quarterback, Dabo Swinney is under fire for why his team has two passing touchdowns in six games.

"We know it's there. We've seen it in bits and pieces, but not consistently enough," Swinney said about Clemson's passing game struggles. "I mean, we threw for almost 300 yards against a team that may be ranked No. 1 in the country today (Miami)." Rather than place any of the blame on Reynolds, Swinney instead called out his receivers for all the drops the Tigers had versus Charleston Southern.

Swinney choosing to enable Reynolds is not protecting him; it is only hurting this team's trajectory. Reynolds may have a ton of promise, but he is only a true freshman. With Christopher Vizzina having played in parts of two games, it has become abundantly clear that Swinney took a misguided gamble by not venturing into the transfer portal. Just imagine how much better Clemson would be if he did.

Dabo Swinney's quarterback loyalty is limiting Clemson's overall ceiling

The next two weeks may be especially telling for Clemson. Both games will be primetime kicks versus Virginia Tech and Florida State. Fate would have it, both teams start transfers at quarterback. Ethan Grunkemeyer followed James Franklin over from Penn State to Blacksburg. Ashton Daniels is on his third Power Four team with Florida State after spending time at both Auburn and Stanford previously.

They will not be the first transfer quarterbacks Clemson will be going up against, nor will they be the last. Sam Leavitt, Max Johnson, Billy Edwards Jr., and Darian Mensah all played their college football somewhere else before linking up with their current schools. Quarterbacks like Alberto Mendoza and Walker Eget did not start their college careers in the ACC either. Clemson has remained steadfast.

We are getting past the point of whether loyalty is actually a great trait worth having in this day and age of college football. For an old-school head coach like Swinney, it might be worth more than ever to contend for a national title again. In short, had Clemson landed even one of those quarterbacks, maybe they would not have the worst passing offense in the country? It is something to think about.

there are no additions to be made to any rosters for the rest of the season, only subtractions. Clearly, Swinney has made his bed with this mess we have on our hands with Reynolds and Vizzina, so now he must lie in it. While the rest of the roster is succeeding --secondary, linebackers, defensive backs-- after having dipped into the transfer portal, the meager offensive line and quarterback rooms are not.

Clemson has to get something out of its quarterback room in the second half, or this could get ugly.
