Dabo Swinney enabling Tait Reynolds' lack of development will only hold Clemson back

Dabo Swinney should praise Tait Reynolds when he has earned it, but not for everything he does.

What game was Dabo Swinney watching Tait Reynolds play on Saturday? In his fourth career start against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, Reynolds completed 17-of-26 passes for 127 yards.

Despite the FCS opponent, Reynolds was unable to throw a single passing touchdown. By the time Clemson hosts Virginia Tech, Reynolds will have gone over a month without throwing a touchdown.

Yet for whatever reason, Swinney believed this was the best game Reynolds has played in a Clemson uniform. The Charleston Southern win lacked the heroics from the UNC victory, the composure from the road win at Cal, or even the stats from the Miami loss. Reynolds was as pedestrian as the team the Tigers faced. With only Power Four teams remaining, Reynolds is simply not living up to the hype.

The delusion continued from Swinney, with him saying, "Tait's our starter. He's earned that." He also would not commit to allowing Christopher Vizzina an opportunity to win the starting job back. All Swinney would comment on that matter was that Vizzina was healthy enough to play on Saturday, and that the Tigers are going to need him down the stretch. Maybe he could throw a touchdown or two?

Dabo Swinney refusing any QB competition may come back to haunt him

Despite Clemson putting forth its best all-around performance on Saturday, all anyone can talk about is the lackluster play from Reynolds at quarterback. Yes, it was great that he finally used his legs for once. However, Reynolds will be going up against far better athletes the rest of the way. Clemson has five games in a row against ACC opponents, as well as a home date versus arch rival South Carolina.

While Clemson is a respectable 4-2 (2-1) on the season, Swinney is totally playing with fire by not allowing Vizzina, Trent Pearman, or anyone, for that matter, to compete with Reynolds for the starting job. There is no worse passing offense in the country than Clemson, yet all Swinney can do is place blame on his receiving corps. TJ Moore had drops, but Reynolds was not looking to throw deep either.

Frankly, we have gone past the point of a small sample size. It is now a sizable one. Reynolds might be talented, but at some point, that talent has to manifest. Clemson's rushing attack was excellent in Week 7. The offensive line held up quite well. The defense and special teams were outstanding. Even the tight ends got involved on Saturday. However, it all comes back to forgettable quarterback play.

If Vizzina can push Reynolds to be better, then that would be amazing. Clearly, Swinney and his staff have downplayed Vizzina's elbow injury. It was only recently that he could be a major participant in practice. This means Reynolds has gotten all of the first-team reps for well over a month now. What has he done with them? He might be the future at quarterback, but the present is a work in progress.

If Week 7 was Reynolds' best game, then we cannot wait to see what he has in store for Virginia Tech.
