Clemson may have won by 37 points, but all anyone can talk about is the play of Tait Reynolds. This was the true freshman's fourth career start at Clemson. On the afternoon, he completed 17-of-26 passes for 127 yards. While he did make some plays with his legs, as illustrated by his seven carries for 40 yards, Reynolds was unable to throw for one touchdown against lowly Charleston Southern.
Since taking over a quarter of the way through the Georgia Southern game, Reynolds has only thrown for one touchdown, and that came nearly a month ago against North Carolina. He may not have been on the same page with TJ Moore in the red zone, but something has to give in the passing game for Clemson soon. The Tigers will only be playing Power Four programs for the rest of the season now.
Yes, Reynolds did not ask to be put into this situation; he is only a true freshman. That being said, at some point, we have to ask ourselves if Reynolds is still the best option at quarterback for Clemson moving forward. Maybe Christopher Vizzina deserves a second look? While Trent Pearman threw some incredibly questionable passes in relief of Reynolds, at least he was still looking down the field.
Let me say that none of this is fair to Tait Reynolds. None. He shouldn’t be in this position & his OL/WR haven’t stepped up.

With that said, 7 weeks into the season the QB room Dabo stood pat with has to be in the discussion for worst in the P4.
Tait Reynolds' lack of development is hindering Clemson passing game
The good news is Clemson has shown us it can win games without Reynolds needing to put this team on his back. The bad news is that whenever Clemson faces a worthy adversary, he is not equipped to help this offense separate and elevate. Reynolds may have a bunch of talent working in his favor in the long run, but these last six games have been more than enough of a sample size to evaluate him.
Yes, it was nice to see him feel confident for once as a runner. This helped take pressure off Gideon Davidson in the backfield, as well as provide opportunities for Chris Johnson Jr. to finally hit pay dirt in a Clemson uniform. Unfortunately, this was a game where Clemson needed to show it can stretch the field vertically. It did anything but that on Saturday afternoon. The rest of the ACC will take notice.
Right now, Clemson is only built to win one way. It has to play outstanding on defense and special teams every week, hoping that the ground game does not dry up and the passing game is not a total net negative. That could work versus some of the lesser teams in the ACC. However, the rest of the league beyond Miami, and maybe Wake Forest, feels very much up for grabs. Who is going to take it?
At some point, Reynolds has to take complete ownership of this offense. Otherwise, Clemson will have to continue to play games with at least one arm tied behind its back. It is so frustrating to watch because the athletes are there in some capacities for this offense, but it is lacking the necessary key to truly put this thing into gear. We might not ever see this Clemson offense get rolling this season.
This was a massive opportunity for Reynolds to gain confidence, but he let it slip through his fingers.
