Dabo Swinney is going about it all wrong when analyzing Clemson's persistent passing game issues. Rather than putting any onus on the lackluster quarterback play his team has gotten in the first six games of the season, he keeps putting the blame on the receiving corps, while placing so much undeserved praise on true freshman quarterback Tait Reynolds. Has Swinney forgotten where his bread is buttered?

At his core, Swinney is a receivers coach and a recruiter. Year over year, the receiving corps is usually one of Clemson's best overall units. That remains true for this season. Yet for some reason, the trio of Tyler Brown, TJ Moore, and Bryant Wesco Jr. can do no right in Swinney's eyes, while Reynolds can do no wrong. It is a great way to alienate the players on the team, the fan base, and prospective recruits.

Swinney said during Monday's meeting with the media that Clemson "could've had another 100" passing yards, if not for the drops. "We'd have more if we caught the ball, and we've had opportunities for more... We've certainly left plenty out there," Swinney said about why Clemson only has two passing touchdowns six games into the season. And of course, he said Reynolds just played his best game.

This is the type of gaslighting that could completely unravel an entire program in a matter of weeks.

Dabo Swinney going after homegrown receivers could unravel Clemson

One thing that all four of these Clemson offensive players have in common is that they committed to the Tigers out of high school. This is the only college football program they have ever known. While the defense has far more transfers than the offense does, Clemson is only as good as its passing game allows it to be. Once that goes, then everything goes. No wonder it is going right now.

Simply put, Swinney and his staff need to recruit better out of high school, or the Tigers will have to get serious about using the transfer portal to help their team out in all three phases. Swinney refusing to add a transfer portal quarterback last offseason has come back to haunt this team in a major way. It has effectively capped this team's ceiling, one that will be so lucky if it even got back to Charlotte.

After watching Reynolds waste his best opportunity to get better against Charleston Southern, how confident should anyone be about the passing attack ticking up in the second half? At some point, Reynolds will have to take it upon himself to be a catalyst for change offensively. This is a problem with a receiver group being a team's best individual unit. In the end, it is still quarterback-dependent.

Right now, Swinney, Chad Morris, Matt Luke, and the rest of the offensive staff will have to coach their tails off to overcome the false ceiling Swinney has created in the quarterback room. Placing too much blame on the receiving corps is not the right way to go about it. The only way this Clemson offense improves the rest of the way is if Reynolds and the offensive line rise to the occasion during ACC play.

For now, Clemson is one bad half from drastic changes happening to the program in the offseason.
