Trevor Lawrence is out recruiting for the Clemson football program
Former Clemson football QB Trevor Lawrence might be focused on developing and preparing for his professional career, but he’ll always be a Tiger.
During his time with the program, Trevor Lawrence has represented Clemson football with nothing but pure class and that will undoubtedly continue as he most certainly becomes the face of the franchise for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the next couple of months.
While it would be easy for Lawrence to turn his attention to the NFL and never look back, he hasn’t done anything of the sort currently.
4-star QB target Ty Simpson revealed during an interview with 104.5 The Zone earlier last week that Lawrence had actually contacted him once to talk about the Clemson football program.
"He [Trevor Lawrence] actually called one time,” Simpson said during the interview. “I had a Georgia number (calling) and I was like, ‘Oh, my goodness — spam call.’ “All of a sudden, ‘Hey, Ty, this is Trevor Lawrence.’ It’s like, ‘Holy crap. I’m talking to the future number-one overall pick.’ It was really cool. I asked him, why did he go to Clemson? Why didn’t he want to stay in the SEC? And how is your walk with Christ there? And I just told him I appreciate what he does from his platform, showing kids like my brother — who’s an 11-year-old who is a diehard Clemson fan — showing guys like that how a quarterback can act. And I just told him I appreciate it, and he gave me some good advice and some things I didn’t realize, so it was cool to get to talk to him.”"
Simpson was complimentary on every school he was asked about during the interview and certainly didn’t tip his hand either way.
Recruiting insiders expect Simpson to choose Clemson football, but that doesn’t mean anything until the paper is signed
There have been three crystal ball predictions placed by 247 Sports recruiting experts that all point to Clemson. Two of them have been made in the last two weeks.
Simpson talks openly about his faith- something that resonates with a lot of players when they meet Dabo Swinney– but something that might push against Clemson is how complimentary he is of the SEC.
All of Simpson’s named top schools- Tennessee, Alabama, Ole Miss, Texas A&M- outside of Clemson are SEC schools. While many believed he was moving away from the Vols, he was very complimentary of Tennessee during the interview saying that they had not lost any ground in his recruitment and that he had talked to new head coach Josh Heupel more than 20 times since he took over the position.
In addition to the heavy recruitment being put on by Tennessee, Alabama is a major threat, as well.
This has been the identified target and the deemed potential ‘savior’ for the Tennessee football program for quite some time. If he does end up going elsewhere- Clemson or Alabama- it will be a massive blow for the program just trying to get its feet back underneath it.
At this point, it’s too soon to really know where Simpson will land, but he is slated to make his decision on Friday, Feb. 26 and Clemson football has as good of a chance- likely a better chance- as any of gaining his commitment.
