It may not seem like much, but the Georgia Southern Eagles feeling themselves heading into Death Valley may blow up in their face. On Friday night, Georgia Southern Football's account on X shared a video titled "Statement time" about the Eagles potentially upsetting another Power Four opponent, Clemson. The video in question showed the Eagles' wins over Nebraska and Florida from yesteryear.
Even though Clemson did not look like a component ACC team in its road loss at LSU, the Tigers are still a multi-score favorite over the visiting Eagles in this one. FanDuel Sportsbook has Clemson laying 19.5 points to Georgia Southern. The betting line might have opened at Clemson -20.5, but it would still be a monumental upset if the Tigers lost in Death Valley to Clay Helton's team on Saturday night.
Of Clemson's first five games of the season, this one with the Eagles is easily its most winnable. However, Dabo Swinney and his staff are quickly falling out of favor with the Clemson family. Last year's disastrous 7-6 campaign is still fresh in everyone's mind. It is why the Tigers need to play with a refined sense of focus to put all this unnecessary hoopla to rest. Otherwise, it could be season over.

Dabo Swinney, Clemson can't afford to let Georgia Southern hang around
Not only would a loss to Georgia Southern be among the worst defeats in Clemson football history, but Swinney's team is staring a huge program accomplishment in the face in this game. With a win on Saturday night, Clemson would improve to 100-18-8 in home openers. This feels like a layup for the Tigers to make. It is why Swinney and his team cannot tempt fate here and play down to the Eagles.
Georgia Southern may have a proud football history, but Erk Russell is not walking through that door. Clemson is the far more talented team coming in. While Clay Helton has been able to reinvent himself to some degree since taking over in Statesboro, it was not that long ago that he was struggling to stay the course at traditional power USC. Swinney cannot afford to lose the plot anymore, leading Clemson.
Right now, Clemson should feel confident about its chances of improving to 1-1 on the year with a big home win over Georgia Southern. As if being embarrassed on the road last weekend to LSU was not enough, Georgia Southern just provided Swinney and his team all the motivation they could ever need. Then again, it all comes down to execution. That was a huge problem for Clemson last Saturday night.
Simply put, the longer Clemson plays with its food or allows Georgia Southern to build up confidence, that could become an issue for the Tigers. There are two games on their schedule against non-Power Four opponents, and this is one of them. Even though Georgia Southern competes in the FBS, the Eagles have yet to truly break out like they did in the FCS since they moved up over a decade ago.
Georgia Southern may have a history of being a giant killer, but let's not let it happen a third time.
