Dabo Swinney has embraced the new era of college football, and during his press conference at the Tigers' annual media outing, he pulled back the curtain on how the new monthly revenue-sharing rules are already shaping player decisions and keeping the Tigers locked in from the first snap to the final whistle.
Clemson’s player retention is the envy of college football, and it’s no accident. Swinney and his staff have built a culture where players see real value—on and off the field. The new monthly pay model just adds another reason for Tigers to keep grinding, instead of sitting out or looking for a redshirt early in the season.
"Now that you're finally into rev share, it's you know you get paid monthly. You don't show up work. You don't get you know you know, so guys guys are last year everything was kind of front loaded," Swinney revealed. "And it's a different deal a year in now, where you know guys get their rev share stuff monthly, so that's part of it. You know, so you got to show up. That's where it starts... I'd be surprised if it doesn't, because at the end of the day, these guys want to play, and it's good for them to even if they know they're going to leave. It's good for them to get taped and so forth."
While the money talk grabs headlines, the real news for Clemson fans is that the quarterback depth chart is finally set. After a heated spring battle, Swinney made it clear: true freshman Tait Reynolds has locked up the backup job behind starter Chris Vizzina, a player who has not taken the money and ran like a lot of players would have done. Instead, he chose to patiently wait for his time.
Swinney isn’t leaving anything to chance. He wants his quarterbacks in total command of the offense before Week 1. Veteran Trent Pearman is still a steady hand, able to run the show when needed, but he won’t be taking away crucial reps from the young guns.
Swinney broke down the mechanics of the quarterback depth chart:
"Going into that last week spring, it was just obvious that Tate had separated from that group, you know, to where, okay, now we needed clarity. It gave us clarity of okay, hey, here's the two guys that we need to go into the summer with, we need to create some clarity, clarity for the team, and you know, because again, you can only rep so many guys. And man, Tate, he got all those two reps that last week, and he went better, better, better... I want to see complete control operationally. You know, now we can focus on what we need to focus on."
