While everyone else was glued to the transfer portal, Dabo Swinney was back in his element, cooking up a quarterback battle that could go down as an all-timer in Clemson lore.
On Josh Pate's College Football Show, Dabo finally gave Tiger Nation what we've all been waiting for: real answers about the most talked-about spot on the roster. As we barrel toward summer, the race to lead the Tigers into Death Valley South on September 5 is down to two—redshirt junior Christopher Vizzina and the red-hot freshman, Tait Reynolds.
The Veteran’s Edge
Christopher Vizzina still holds the edge. He stepped in late last year and lit up SMU for over 300 yards in his first start, then spent the spring showing he’s got the grit and poise to be the guy for Chad Morris’s pedal-to-the-metal offense.
"We believe in Vizzina. I think he's got a chance to be a really good player," Swinney told Pate. "He's only started one game, and he did his part to win that game... I like how he's responded, and I like how he's competed. But he's the most experienced guy we've got."
The Freshman Phenom
CV did his job, but let’s be honest—the spring belonged to Tait Reynolds. The freshman walked into a room full of veterans like Trent Pearman and Chris Denson and didn’t just hold his own, he flat-out stole the show. With a cannon for an arm and athleticism that jumps off the field, Reynolds made it clear the No. 2 spot isn’t even a question anymore.
Iron Sharpens Iron
If you bleed orange, this is the dream. We all remember what happens when two studs go toe-to-toe—just look at the epic QB duels that have made the Swinney era so special. Dabo’s message is loud and clear: nothing is given, everything is earned in this program.
"We're coming out with some clarity, and we have two really good players who are going to go compete," Swinney said. "And either way, we're going to get better. CV holds this kid off, and he's earned it. Tait beats him out, then -- because CV ain't going to back up... So either way, we get better there."
Whether it’s Vizzina’s cool confidence or Reynolds’ electric upsidex, the Tigers are rolling into Baton Rouge with a quarterback room as loaded as we’ve seen in years. The summer heat is coming, but the hottest competition in college football is right here in Clemson’s own backyard.
