Dabo Swinney finally caved by naming Christopher Vizzina the next starting quarterback for the Clemson Tigers on Tuesday. Better late than never. While it was always trending in this direction, it just goes to show that old habits die hard for this funky football coach. It took all summer long for the veteran Vizzina to beat out the talented true freshman Tait Reynolds for the starting job.
While Swinney may have been pragmatic in naming Vizzina the starter, there is a certain sector of the Clemson fanbase that would have preferred to see what Reynolds had going from the jump. Although Vizzina was always going to beat him out, it would not be shocking for the freshman to overtake him on the depth chart before all is said and done. Swinney opted to go conservative, and it may cost him.
For Clemson to pull off the road upset of No. 11 LSU, the offense will need to rattle off a few explosive plays. Vizzina has plenty of arm talent, but Reynolds is the more mobile quarterback coming in. With the ground game being crucial to Clemson's overall success this season, whoever keeps the chains moving and the clock ticking will eventually take the reins of this Chad Morris offense once and for all.

Dabo Swinney won't take any risks by naming Christopher Vizzina QB1
There are two primary reasons why Swinney tabbed Vizzina over Reynolds to start in Week 1. The first has everything to do with who and where Clemson will be playing on Saturday night. Opening the season at No. 11 LSU is not easy, so going with a true freshman might make things even harder for the Tigers than giving the fourth-year player the green dot. The other is all about rewarding loyalty.
Swinney has done this before, and he will probably do it again. When the timing is right, the more talented will prevail and start games. Deshaun Watson overtook Cole Stoudt in 2014. Kelly Bryant eventually gave way to Trevor Lawrence in 2018, and that was after Bryant led Clemson to the CFP in 2017! It honestly feels like Vizzina is keeping Reynolds' seat warm until he is ready to start games.
Vizzina may be the more experienced player, but the bulk of his stats came in one game for Clemson. While he did play quite well vs. SMU last season, that was still an 11-point home loss for the Tigers. So much is riding on Vizzina's 29 completions for 317 yards and three touchdowns vs. the Mustangs. The fact that he only had four rushing yards on 15 carries in that game is concerning, to say the least.
Simply, Swinney is banking on Vizzina's ability to conduct a symphony behind the line of scrimmage more so than Reynolds' virtuosic talents. With Clemson being tasked to run the gauntlet during its first five games of the year, how sure is anyone that Vizzina will be the one to guide the Tigers to a 3-2 or better record over that span? If he goes 2-3 or worse, then it should have been Reynolds to start.
Vizzina may be more mature, but Reynolds has physical traits most quarterbacks can only dream of.
