The longer the Clemson starting quarterback battle goes on, the more likely it is to be heading in one direction. Eventually, true freshman Tait Reynolds is going to overtake veteran Christopher Vizzina on the depth chart and ascend to QB1. Dabo Swinney is incredibly reluctant to start a freshman right away, but he will quickly pivot to the more talented player once it becomes painfully obvious to do so.
Swinney has done this twice before with Deshaun Watson taking over for Cole Stoudt in 2014 and then Trevor Lawrence beating out Kelly Bryant in 2018. ESPN's Greg McElroy believes history will repeat itself at Clemson. “They haven’t named a starter yet, even if it is Vizzina,” McElroy said. “It will be like a Lawrence or Watson situation with Tait Reynolds; it’s just a matter of time he sees the field.”
Vizzina has been with the program the last few years out of his native Birmingham. While he has been a good soldier throughout the process, Reynolds' talent had been the talk of fall camp for Clemson. With so much riding on this season for Swinney and the Tigers, he may need to go with the more physically gifted quarterback to run Chad Morris' uptempo offense over Vizzina before it is too late.

Christopher Vizzina will be on a short leash if he is Clemson's starting QB
The biggest reason why Swinney will go with Vizzina from the start has everything to do with Clemson's schedule. Do you really think he is going to let a true freshman lead the Tigers out of the tunnel into Tiger Stadium in Week 1? Clemson does not have to win that tough road game at LSU to be better this season, but it could serve as a tone-setter, whether it be good, bad, or downright ugly.
After the LSU date, Clemson hosts Georgia Southern and North Carolina at home. While the Tigers should beat the Eagles, the Tar Heels looked at least somewhat competent when compared to last year in their 15-10 Week 0 win over TCU in Dublin. After the UNC game, that is where things get tricky. Clemson must play late on a Friday night at Cal, before coming home to host Miami in early October.
If Clemson suffers two or more losses during those first five games, it will give Swinney every reason to pivot to Reynolds. Not only does he need to keep a season potentially going to the wayside intact, but he might have to save his own hide. Swinney may have a $57 million buyout and is the greatest head coach in program history, but all good things must come to an end. Don't let stubbornness win.
Even before seeing McElroy's thoughts on the matter, it has been easy for us to connect the dots in this ongoing quarterback battle. The chances of us seeing both quarterbacks start games this year are strong. However, once Reynolds takes the baton from Vizzina, he is not handing it back. Vizzina may only be keeping the seat warm for Reynolds until his is ready after the Baton Rouge road game.
The big question now is not if Swinney will go down this quarterback pathway again, but how soon.
