It should not come as a surprise, but Christopher Vizzina seems to be in pole position to win the Clemson starting quarterback job. After all, it is Year 4 for him in the program. Although true freshman Tait Reynolds may have the higher ceiling and could potentially overtake him at some point later on this season, old Dabo Swinney habits die hard. Vizzina being QB1 has everything to do with Week 1.
While Vizzina has played well at times during spring practice and fall camp, he has not exactly run away with the starting job either. Matt Zenitz's intel for CBS Sports suggests that it will be Vizzina leading the Tigers out of the tunnel vs. LSU on Sept. 5. That right there is exactly why Vizzina was always going to be the starting quarterback for Clemson anyway, or at least right from the jump...
Swinney has often started a new quarterback who has been with the program for a while over a more talented freshman. In both cases of note, the freshman phenom eventually won out. Deshaun Watson overtook Cole Stoudt in 2014. Even after leading Clemson to the playoffs in 2017, Kelly Bryant could not keep Trevor Lawrence on the bench in 2018. After making these moves, Clemson would win titles.
History has a funny way of repeating itself with Swinney having set the table for what is sure to come.

Christopher Vizzina to beat out Tait Reynolds as Clemson QB1 ... for now
When Swinney let Vizzina speak with the media later in fall camp, he knew exactly what he was doing. However, he has a rule against letting freshmen do media obligations before they play in their first game. Since Reynolds is a true freshman, he has yet to fulfill that requirement. By putting Vizzina front and center, it may help soften the blow a bit of the good soldier leading Clemson in Week 1 vs. LSU.
That is truly the big thing in all of this. If Clemson were to be playing a lesser program, preferably one at home, it may have made it slightly easier for Swinney to buck his longstanding preference. In time, maybe Vizzina does create some undeniable separation between him and Reynolds? For now, he is the leader almost by default. Swinney was never going to let a true freshman debut at Tiger Stadium.
The reasoning behind this is simple. Swinney needs to win big this season. While he is not on the hot seat, another substandard season out of Clemson could put him on it in a hurry. Clemson does have a navigable ACC schedule, one that has the Tigers drawing Miami at home, as well as avoiding SMU and Louisville altogether. However, they may need to split their SEC games to have a shot at the playoffs.
In short, while Reynolds may have the higher ceiling, Vizzina arguably gives Clemson the best chance to pull off the road upset at LSU. One should expect that both quarterbacks will play some throughout the season. This is what we saw in 2014 with Stoudt giving way to Watson, as well as what transpired when Lawrence eventually took over for Bryant in 2018. It all comes down to Reynolds finding himself.
We are on the verge of seeing Swinney take a page out of the old 2018 playbook and apply it to 2026.
