Clemson DT Vic Burley is one step closer to returning following his untimely arrest

In a bit of good news, there may be a pathway toward Vic Burley returning to the Clemson Tigers' sidelines here soon. While that will be entirely contingent on how Dabo Swinney feels about bringing him back into the fold, Burley did get a positive update regarding his ongoing legal situation.

According to Grayson Mann of TigerNet.com, "Clemson DT Vic Burley has received a conditional discharge in his disorderly conduct case. Burley will be required to take multiple classes, complete 24 hours of community service, and will be under court supervision for six months."

While those six months will completely overlap with the 2026 college football season, the news of Burley's case potentially being dropped could play a part in him suiting up at some point later on this season. Burley was arrested early Saturday morning by the Clemson University Police Department for disorderly conduct. He was caught sleeping in his car, under the influence, and possessing a gun.

Burley would later issue the following apology over social media stemming from Saturday's arrest.

"I want to start by apologizing to my coaches, my teammates, our University, and our fans," Burley wrote in a statement. "I let you down, and I take full responsibility for my actions that night. You all have invested so much in me, and I undersstand I have some work to do to earn back your trust -- but I promise you, I will."

Again, this will all come down to how Swinney feels about the situation at hand. With the process of his case being dismissed, Burley could conceivably return to the field sooner rather than later. Frankly, the Tigers could use him in the trenches. He was projected to be their Week 1 starter at defensive tackle. Coming into this campaign, the defensive line is a weak point for Clemson.

While Burley's continued absence may afford even more playing time for Andy Burburija, keep in mind that he is coming up from the junior college level. He may have had a great fall camp, but it is a major leap up in competition playing in the ACC. Over the last few years, Clemson fans have been waiting patiently for Burley to tap into all his talent. Whether it be injuries or his arrest, it has not happened.

What will be interesting is how long Clemson can afford to hold serve without Burley as a part of the defensive line rotation. Tom Allen is an adept defensive mind, but his side of the ball is lacking depth at key position groups. With football being a game of injuries, that already compromised depth is slated to take another big hit or two. If there is any good news from this, maybe Burley will be fully healthy if and when he returns?

Ultimately, even if the timing of Burley's arrest could not have been worse, chances are that we have yet to see the last of him suit up in a Clemson uniform. While Swinney may try to straddle the moral high ground in all of this, he is about to enter his most critical season to date. Another sub-10-win season may not cut it with the fanbase. Even if that is potentially on the horizon, he has to combat it.

In a year with so much at stake, Swinney may need to swallow his pride and extend the olive branch.
