Defensive transfers ball out
Johnson was just one of the 12 transfers Dabo Swinney’s staff brought in this offseason. He also was just one of only two transfers that is an offensive player. Tom Allen acquired 10 players out of the portal to fill his unit.
Much of that new talent was needed after losing five defensive starters to the NFL draft, and three more to the portal. For Allen, this became a blessing because it allowed him to build a defense more aligned with his vision. He said he wanted more length and speed, which he got.
The Tigers welcomed four new defensive tackles, two edge players, and four defensive backs all with college playing experience. One of those defensive tackles, Kourtney Kelly, was injured during spring practices. But, the rest of these players are expected to make an immediate impact this season.
It’s been reported that the defensive backs were playmakers all throughout spring camp. The defensive line showed up big time in the spring game, racking up 12 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. Now, this unit needs to carry the momentum built in the spring through fall camp and into the regular season.
