Trevor Lawrence hasn’t officially been a Jacksonville Jaguar for just over a month now and there’s already a little controversy being created by local media.
The Florida-Times Union’s Eugene Frenette was at the Jaguars workout Thursday afternoon and tweeted that Trevor Lawrence had “struggled” making connections during the 7-on-7 drill.
Frenette says Lawrence overthrew four passes and had another one broken up.
After tweeting that, he later shared a column where he talked about the new culture of the Jaguars but made sure to post this little line with it: “Trevor Lawrence and Tim Tebow aside, there are other signs of optimism about the Jaguars.”
It’s not like Trevor Lawrence just had shoulder surgery or anything. It must be time to press the panic button
It’s easy to see why Jacksonville media are reporting on every little thing that Lawrence does- good and bad. He is the face of the franchise and that’s understandable.
But to act like he had a bad day and to say that he’s struggling is just taking it a bit too far. Lawrence had shoulder surgery literally a couple of months ago and hasn’t even been cleared for full work yet.
Clemson football fans are to see plenty of ‘reports’ over the next few weeks and into the summer any time he is off with a single pass, but the truth is that the Jags know what they have with their rookie quarterback and headlines with words like ‘QB controversy,’ which was published by Sports Illustrated following the workout, simply are inaccurate.
He’s still working his arm back and it’s going to take some time to get in a rhythm with a new offensive system.
While it’s also clear that many Jacksonville media members aren’t happy with Tim Tebow on the roster, it should be noted that he caught two touchdown passes during the session including one from Trevor Lawrence.
Bottom line in all of this: Take what you hear from NFL rookie camps with a grain of salt and Lawrence is going to be just fine.
