Trevor Lawrence Pro Day just made Cornell Powell some money

More than half the league showed up to participate in Trevor Lawrence’s Pro Day workout Friday morning even though they know they aren’t getting the sought-after quarterback.

Trevor Lawrence could’ve thrown Friday morning or he could’ve walked out on the field and performed a dance routine, and nothing would’ve changed his draft stock. We all know that he is going to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft when the Jacksonville Jaguars are on the clock.

Lawrence finished with 10,098 yards passing and accounted for 108 touchdowns to just 17 interceptions in the three years he was with the Clemson football program.

So why were so many teams present at the workout when they knew Trevor Lawrence wasn’t going to be available for them? The answer is simple.

There’s a surging wide receiver in this draft class currently and he had a strong day working out with Trevor Lawrence during the Pro Day. Of course, we’re talking about Cornell Powell.

Powell isn’t going to be a first-round pick- or likely a second-round pick- but he could be a valuable mid-round pick for an NFL franchise looking for a receiver to add to their mix.

There are names atop this draft like Ja’Marr Chase and DeVonta Smith who are going to be spotlighted quite a bit at the wide receiver position, but NFL scouts know what they saw in Cornell Powell during this 2020 season and they want to know if it was a fluke or if he is the real deal.

Anyone breaking down the wide receiver’s full skillset watching the short workout Friday morning certainly wouldn’t think it’s a fluke.

Powell looked fluid in his routes, had great speed and looked as if he had put on a little bit of weight. He did have a couple of drops that will need to be cleaned up, but anyone that has done their research knows that Powell has good hands. He had a nice catch on a vertical route and on a slant-go during the workout.

Just being able to be in front of scouts and them being able to see you in-person is an absolute asset for Powell, which will put him ahead of some receivers that might not get the same opportunity.

When you talk about Day 2 and Day 3 of the NFL Draft, Cornell Powell is going to be one of the names who is on basically every team’s draft board. They’re going to continuously keep an eye on him because franchises today are always looking for game-changing talent- those ‘diamonds in the ruff’- in the mid-rounds. After all, the players you select in the mid-rounds could be the difference between competing for a championship or missing the playoffs altogether.

Powell made himself some money at Trevor Lawrence’s Pro Day Friday and he continued to cement himself as a legitimate wide receiver target for many (and we mean many) teams around the league.
