Could Clemson football flip 5-star QB Gunner Stockton?
The quest for building towards the future never ends for the Clemson football program and many Tiger fans are wondering about a certain 5-star quarterback.
5-star 2020 QB Gunner Stockton announced his decommitment from the University of South Carolina earlier this week following the Gamecock offensive coordinator Mike Bobo’s move to Auburn.
South Carolina has a rash of assistant coaches leave for Auburn over the last week and new head coach Shane Beamer certainly isn’t getting off to a fantastic start following the departure of coaches, players and commitments.
Stockton has had a tight relationship with Bobo and that was his reason for committing to South Carolina in the first place. Now, with Bobo in Auburn, it’s expected that we could see Stockton pledge a new commitment, this time to the Tigers in Alabama.
Is there any chance that Clemson football gets involved in his recruitment?
At this point, there is no indication that the Clemson football coaching staff has plans to get involved heavily in Stockton’s recruitment, though everything is subject to change.
The Tigers have offered two quarterback in the 2022 class and from everything that’s been said, they’re focused on garnering a commitment from one of those two prospects.
Clemson is in well with 4-star QB Ty Simpson, who is rated as the No. 2 dual-threat QB in the nation, and the Tigers also offered 4-star QB Braden Davis, who is rated as the No. 7 dual-threat QB. Both of those ratings are according to 247 Sports’ composite player rankings.
Unless something changes, Tiger fans should take their eyes off of Stockton and place them on these two individuals, in particular Simpson.
There’s a solid chance that Simpson is upgraded to a 5-star before his recruitment comes to a close. He has a little bit of ‘Johnny Manziel’ (on the field) in him with his scrambling ability and it will be interesting to see how that develops and transitions at the next level. Currently, the main competition for his services seem to be Tennessee and potentially Alabama.
Concluding, can we say for all certainty that the Tigers won’t go after Gunner Stockton- who is basically already being considered a commitment to Auburn- at this point? No. But it seems much more likely that Clemson focuses on these two names and potentially another gets added to the mix before it’s all said and done.
