Trevor Lawrence has  a real shot at the Heisman Trophy

Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence has a real opportunity at locking up Heisman votes and potentially coming away with the award despite the amount of people who have completely turned away from him as a candidate early on in the season.

Just a couple of weeks ago it seemed as if Trevor Lawrence was completely out of the Heisman discussion. Though he was the favorite to begin the year, ‘through-the-roof’ expectations seemingly pushed him down the list as hot candidates like Mac Jones and Kyle Trask emerged as the SEC began playing football.

Justin Fields– who was the favorite by many to win the award anyway- also began playing a month later and it wasn’t long before media narratives were pushing Fields as the Heisman frontrunner, especially after Lawrence tested positive for COVID-19 and was forced to sit out for two games.

Unfortunately, those two games turned into five weeks without seeing Lawrence on a football field due to a bye week and a cancellation following the bye week. When he finally did get to play again, it seemed as if he was left for dead in the Heisman discussion.

After all of that, Trevor Lawrence has a chance to put the Heisman Trophy in the bag with a big performance against Notre Dame

The Heisman Trophy voting is different this year and momentum is starting to swing back in Lawrence’s favor.

Though there were a few weeks where he wasn’t even receiving the third amount of votes by ESPN CFB’s weekly Twitter poll, he has now closed in and is just a few percentage point behind Kyle Trask.

That leads us to believe the media narratives- which drive the award, anyway- have shifted as of late.

You’ve got to believe that Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith will split some of that SEC vote with Trask. And you’ve got to believe that the Heisman voting- which is done after the conference title games- may trend away from Trask after he loses a third game to Alabama.

If Jones and Smith split the vote (Jones might be the biggest threat to the award for Lawrence), you’d have a situation where Trevor Lawrence could vault himself up the ladder and put the award in the bag through his leadership and play.

How, if you’re an impressionable Heisman voter, are you not going to vote for a kid that leads his team to a victory over Notre Dame with a big performance, locks up a spot in the CFB Playoff and, oh by the way, he’s the one who saved College Football in the first place?

All it takes is one big performance from Lawrence and he’s your Heisman Trophy winner. Is it time that Clemson football fans see a ‘Heisman moment?’ Well, you might very well Saturday night against the Fighting Irish in the ACC Championship game.
