Clemson Football: Tajh Boyd helped draw D.J. Uiagalelei to the Tigers
This former Clemson football quarterback played a role in the future of the program for years to come
Who would’ve known that Clemson football players in the program years ago would still be helping the program win on & off the field today?
Well, honestly, if you know anything about how Dabo Swinney has operated the Clemson football program, you could’ve likely made that guess.
That being said, Clemson football backup QB D.J. Uiagalelei met with the media for the first time in his career Monday and fielded several different questions pertaining to his time in the program, what made him ultimately choose Clemson and what it’s been like as he has adjusted to the collegiate game.
One of the most intriguing answers from Uiagalelei, though, came when he revealed what ultimately first drew him to the Clemson football program.
Uiagalelei said his first memory of Clemson football was when he was in middle school. He said he enjoyed watching Tajh Boyd ‘throw bombs’ and said he loved the team colors and the type of offense that was being run.
D.J. Uiagalelei has been compared to a blend of former Clemson football quarterbacks, including Tajh Boyd
It’s a lot of fun to see how all of these things come together often in recruiting. Who would’ve thought that Boyd back in 2011-13 and his performances in that Chad Morris-led offense would be one of the first building blocks in D.J. Uiagalelei’s commitment to Clemson more than seven years after the fact.
It just goes to show you how much brand power Clemson currently possesses and how special the Tigers have truly been over the last decade.
As far as on-the-field is concerned, Uiagalelei shows flashes and comparisons of all the great things we love about the previous three Clemson football quarterbacks.
He has arm strength and tallness comparable to Trevor Lawrence. He has elusive athleticism like Deshaun Watson. He is a tank and able to run over defenders like Tajh Boyd.
It’s going to be fun watching him develop over the course of this season and into next year when he ultimately is named the starter and the next face of the Clemson football program.
