No road trips for Clemson football fans this season

The Clemson football fan base is one of the best traveling fan bases in the country, but those road trips will be few and far in between during the 2020 season.

The 2020 Clemson football season is scheduled to kickoff in less than two weeks when the Tigers take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Winston-Salem. While Clemson fans are certainly looking forward to seeing football back this fall, it will certainly be different when the Tigers take Truist Field this time around.

For the first time maybe in 20 years, Clemson won’t hold the majority when it comes to fan count on the road against Wake Forest due to the pandemic and limitations of fans in the stands for the College Football season.

While Wake Forest is expected to allow a small number of fans in the stadium, there won’t be much of a market for the majority of Clemson football fans to make it to Winston-Salem and have a ticket into the game and, honestly, we should expect that trend to continue throughout the fall.

Clemson football fans aren’t going to be traveling across the country like normal

We all know what the Tigers are planning to do for their home games- allowing around 19,000 fans with a little more than 2,000 reserved for students. Clemson will allow a maximum allocation of 200 tickets for visiting fans- which is for the family and friends of players, not for public sale.

But since each University is different, that means each school will have different rules.

Here’s a look at Clemson’s five away games:

  • Wake Forest (Sept. 12)
  • Georgia Tech (Oct. 17)
  • Notre Dame (Nov. 7)
  • Florida State (Nov. 21)
  • Virginia Tech (Dec. 5)

At this point, Notre Dame has already announced that their football games will be limited to 20 percent capacity and will only be available to students, faculty and staff members.

Georgia Tech and Florida State are expected to have fans of some kind– and it’s not out of the question that Clemson football fans could snatch up tickets at one of those venues- but it certainly won’t be at the rate in which they normally have in the past.

Update (Sept. 1, 2020): Wake Forest will not have any fans at its home opener against the Tigers.

Virginia Tech is only anticipating 1,000 fans per game and that number will remain at that cap until guidelines from the state of Virginia change.

So, to be clear, Clemson football fans likely won’t be making many- if any- road trips this regular season. There’s a chance that some Tiger fans could still find a way to getting tickets for a game in Tallahassee or Atlanta, but it’s certainly not looking promising for this season.
