Clemson releases stadium capacity plan for 2020 season

Clemson Athletics announced Thursday evening that it had received state approval from the South Carolina Department of Commerce on a plan to allow 19,000 fans in Death Valley, or about 23 percent capacity.

Death Valley, which has a normal capacity of about 81,500, will be reduced this season to adhere to social distancing guidelines by allowing fans to spread throughout the stadium while remaining six feet apart.

Here’s a look at some of the major takeaways from the announced plan that Clemson football fans should be aware of:

  • Masks are required at all times except when eating or drinking.
  • Fans will be seated primarily in pods of two or four, or four affiliated guests throughout the stadium with distancing pods.
  • Pregame traditions like the Tiger Band parade and Tiger Walk won’t take place.
  • Gathering at the Paw will not take place following the game
  • Each fan will have a designated gate of entry
  • Stadium re-entry will not be allowed
  • All tickets will be mobile (as previously announced)

What about outside of the stadium?

  • Lots will open up three hours before kickoff
  • Clemson asks fans not to tailgate. Trailers, tents and large groups are prohibited.
  • Parking assignments will be based on seating locations to minimize contact.
  • Lots will close 60 minutes after the game ends.

Things are going to look a lot different for Clemson football fans

We haven’t seen this little amount of fans in the stadium in Death Valley in decades, but we have to remember one thing: A little bit is better than nothing.

Yes, it’s not fun that we won’t get to see extravagant tailgates this year. It’s going to be different seeing a night game in Death Valley with only 19,000 fans rather than a packed stadium and an electric atmosphere.

That being said, we all have to work together and a little bit is better than nothing. Football is better than no football. A limited number of fans is better than no fans at all.

Clemson is scheduled to kickoff the 2020 season on the road at Wake Forest Sept. 12 and will host The Citadel the following week.
