Clemson Football: Could Tigers add an in-state QB for 2020 cycle?
The 2020 Clemson football recruiting cycle is coming to a close, but the Tigers still have a few prospects left on their board.
The 2020 Clemson football recruiting class likely won’t add another scholarship player in this cycle, barring something unforeseen.
That being said, the Tigers still have a few preferred walk-on offers that could result in scholarship offers later on, depending on numbers.
One of the top preferred walk-on offers is in-state QB Hunter Helms. Helms, a Columbia, SC product, has been recruited by Clemson QB Coach Brandon Streeter fairly heavily and could be a nice addition to the roster should he choose to accept the offer on National Signing Day, which is just a couple of weeks from now.
At this point, Helms has offers from several schools including Charleston Southern, Elot, UT-Chattanooga, Troy and USF. He’s scheduled to take an official visit to USF this weekend, but Clemson football is still on top, according to Tigernet.
Thoughts:
Helms isn’t a guy that Clemson would be counting on to come in and make a big splash right away. What he would be, though, is a guy that could create depth for the QB position and serve as a solid option on the scout team.
He has a strong arm and certainly could develop into a solid collegiate player at the next level, but it’s clear that he’s extremely interested in Clemson football and would likely take a spot on the roster with the Tigers over many scholarship offers elsewhere.
It will be interesting to see how Helms’ recruitment goes over the course of the next couple of weeks. He’ll have some major decisions to make and it’s clear that Jeff Scott’s USF program is heating up.
If Helms does choose Clemson, he’ll join a QB room with Trevor Lawrence, Taisun Phommachanh, DJ Uiagalelei and Ben Batson, as well as Patrick McClure.
