4-star Clemson football WR signee EJ Williams hasn’t gotten the ‘press’ that many other WRs have, but he’s still an extremely talented prospect.

The Clemson football program currently has two wide receivers signed in the 2020 class: 4-star WR EJ Williams and 3-star WR Ajou Ajou.

The Tigers weren’t necessarily impressed with the depth or talent of the position during the 2020 cycle as a whole, but they found two gems in the class who have the potential to be contributors at the next level.

Out of the two signees, it’s pretty clear that EJ Williams is the one most ready to compete from Day One.

Williams is a product of Phenix, City, Alabama, and actually attended the same High School as current Clemson football WR Justyn Ross. He was heavily recruited by Auburn, Alabama, LSU and Tennessee, but ultimately chose Clemson back in August.

Williams has been well-coached and does a lot of things well. He’s not necessarily elite in a single area- like Justyn Ross was in going up and getting the ball- but he doesn’t really have an area that would be defined as a weakness.

At 6-foot-3 and 190 pounds, Williams could develop into a solid boundary receiver or the Tigers could elect to use him in the ‘field’ role. He’s really good at going up and getting the ball and will become more physical as he gets into the weight room.

Williams won’t be relied upon to play a ton of snaps early, but he’ll still have an opportunity to compete and will gain some playing time, maybe to the surprise of many.

Clemson has Justyn Ross, Amari Rodgers, Frank Ladson Jr., Joseph Ngata, Cornell Powell and Brannon Spector returning in the wide receiver group. Adding Williams to that mix, you could see depth develop and new stars born fairly early on in the process.

He’s not going to be Sammy Watkins– coming in and lighting the world on fire from Day One- but Williams will certainly compete and has the potential to develop into an elite wide receiver before it’s all said and done.
