Clemson Football: Who will be the Tigers’ Kicker in 2018?
One of the position competitions least talked about in Clemson football circles is the kicker position. Who will be the Tigers’ kicker in 2018?
The 2018 Clemson football season is less than a month away and analysts everywhere are revving up their computers and making predictions.
The Tigers have several positions in which battles are going on. The quarterback competition, how the wide receivers will be arranged, the defensive line depth, the linebackers, and several other spots get talked about a lot.
While those are all fun to analyze and speculate on, there is one position that is in the midst of a battle that no one talks about: the kicker position.
Clemson Football: Kicker Competition…
There are three guys that will compete for that starting kicker spot in 2018: Greg Huegel, Alex Spence, and BT Potter.
Huegel was the starter in 2016 and was named a Lou Groza Semifinalist and Second-Team All-ACC. Unfortunately for him, though, he suffered an ACL tear early in the 2017 season that made him miss the rest of the year.
In came Alex Spence.
Spence was shaky at times for the vast majority of 2017, but came on strong towards the end of the season. As a matter of fact, he was the only Clemson football player to score against Alabama with the two field goals in the Sugar Bowl loss.
Currently those two guys are listed as co-starters at the position. But, there’s one other guy: Freshman BT Potter.
Potter, in my opinion, is the most skilled out of the three kickers. He has consistently hit field goals at the high school level and has an extremely strong leg. Here’s a video of Potter kicking a 60-yard field goal in the indoor practice facility earlier this summer:
Bottom Line:
Right now, I would give the edge to Greg Huegel, assuming health. I think his experience will prove to be invaluable for the Tigers. In some way, though, I think all three of these guys will find their way on the field in some role.
One may handle kickoff duties. The other may get a chance to kick extra points every now and then or something like that.

It will be interesting to see how the coaching staff handles the three kickers and who we see sent out to kick field goals for the Tigers in 2018.
