This may be a bit controversial, but it’s a legitimate question. Will Clemson football fans pull for South Carolina against Georgia this weekend?
I’ve grown up a Clemson football fan.
I’ve been to Tiger Town so many times I’ve lost count and I’ve always been taught two things when it comes to College Football:
- Love everything orange and purple
- Hate everything garnet and black
From being a fan of Clemson to being able to cover Tiger games, I’ve always bled orange and purple.
So, what I’m about to say may almost sound sacrilegious, but will Clemson football fans be pulling for the South Carolina Gamecocks this weekend?
The Gamecocks, led by self-proclaimed all-pro quarterback Jake Bentley, will travel down to Athens to take on the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday.

Now, normally, I would be pulling really hard for Georgia. I wouldn’t want the Bulldogs to just win, but win big.
But, in this case, it would actually benefit Clemson for South Carolina to win.
There is no benefit for the Tigers if Georgia beats South Carolina. Well, other than the joy that comes with seeing the Gamecocks lose. But, if you’re Clemson, you need Georgia to lose.
The last thing you want if you’re a Tiger fan is for Georgia to go undefeated and have only one loss against Alabama in the SEC Championship game. The committee is dying to get two teams in from one conference and this would be the perfect scenario for them to do so.
You also have to worry about Notre Dame who, if they finish 11-1, will probably be in the playoff as well.
Clemson needs some teams to lose and Georgia is probably one of those. Will South Carolina be the one to do it? Probably not. But there very well may be a contingent of Clemson football fans inclined to, not necessarily pull for the Gamecocks, but to pull against Georgia.

It certainly is an interesting dynamic and I’m not sure I could bring myself to do it, but I can admit that it won’t hurt my feelings if the Bulldogs were upset on Saturday.
