ESPN recently held their 2017 Mock Draft, in which each of the reporters from NFL Nation made selections for the franchise that they cover. In their mock draft, Clemson’s Deshaun Watson falls all the way to the New Orleans Saints with the 32nd pick in the first round.

Fit-

I think that Deshaun Watson would fit perfectly into the New Orleans Saints organization. Watson is a high character individual with a passion for the game of football. I also believe that Watson is similar to Drew Brees in arm strength, neither of them have cannons for an arm.

Being able to sit and learn from one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL would be invaluable for Deshaun Watson. It would allow Watson to develop and acclimate himself to the speed of the NFL game.

Reaction (Head)-

With Drew Brees growing older, the Saints need to identify a successor and Sean Payton is not afraid to take a chance on a quarterback with a perceived lack of arm strength.

Reaction (Heart)-

First off, it would make no sense for the Saints to waste their first round pick on a player who will most likely not play for the first two to three years of his career. The Saints are not a franchise building towards a distant future, they have the quarterback in place to make a run at the Super Bowl within the next two seasons. Draft a corner or someone to bolster your secondary, not a quarterback.

Secondly, I am baffled by the fact that Deshaun Watson could drop all the way to the bottom of the first round. The NFL draft process is as fascinating as it is maddening.

I can’t wrap my head around Watson, a proven winner and National Champion, dropping to 32nd overall, yet Mitchell Trubisky, a 13 game starter who failed to beat out Marquise Williams for UNC’s starting quarterback job in 2015, goes 12th overall to the Cleveland Browns.
