Water is starting to find its level when it comes to the Clemson at Florida State betting odds. While the Seminoles have earned the right to be the favorite coming in, this is a team that should not be laying more than a touchdown to any winning team, no matter how bad this Clemson offense may be. As of Thursday afternoon, the betting odds have shifted for the second time ahead of this ACC game.
According to the FanDuel Sportsbook, Florida State is now laying 5.5 points to visiting Clemson. This is what the opening point spread was initially. It quickly moved up to Florida State laying 6.5 points, but it has come back down to 5.5 in a little more than two days before Saturday night's primetime kick on Halloween. This may indicate how hard it is for the betting public to really get behind Florida State.
For further context, the associated moneylines for this game are Florida State -215 and Clemson +180. This means you would need to wager $215 on Florida State to win outright to collect $100, while a $100 bet on Clemson could pocket you $180. The moneylines have roughly been about the same since the betting odds first opened. The projected point total remains at 49.5, down from 51.5.
Mike Norvell has such a bad reputation to overcome at Florida State
If Clemson is to win this game, the Tigers must keep it low-scoring by dominating on defense and special teams. Should Florida State come out on top, it will be because the Seminoles' offense put up too many points for Clemson to attempt to match. Clemson has yet to exceed 30 points in a game versus an FBS opponent. Florida regularly eclipses that point threshold, even in heartbreaking losses.
What this latest betting odds shift is telling us is that even if the smart play may be to wager on Mike Norvell's Seminoles at home, he has a bad reputation working against him. Dabo Swinney's Tigers may be up against it, but he is still the far more respected head coach in the ACC. Look for Clemson to be playing with a boulder-sized chip on its shoulder. Will FSU handle the pressure of being favored?
Right now, this line suggests that the general public is not as willing to back Norvell as some of the sharks are. Clemson getting points should only be a good thing. However, Florida State may not be as bad as what the Seminoles' 3-4 record indicates, hence them laying as many as 6.5 points earlier in the week. Though neither team is playoff-caliber, the loser of this game will be in fairly rough shape.
In a way, all the pressure is on Norvell to effectively take himself off the hot seat. With Florida State's financial situation not being in a good spot, the bottom will truly have to fall out of the bag for the university to move on from him. Keep in mind that the Seminoles have not had an athletic director for over a month now. It is why Swinney may need to win this one to prevent himself from being ridiculed.
Swinney's seat is nowhere near as hot as Norvell's, but it is starting to get a little more toasty of late.
