Just like that, the Butta Johnson era at Clemson has slammed into a brick wall, leaving Tiger fans stunned and searching for answers.

For the second time this week, Clemson hoops took a gut punch as Butta Johnson hit the transfer portal, per On3’s Pete Nakos. But this one stings a little extra, because the Huntsville, Alabama product will need a waiver just to see the floor again in 2026-27.

Tiger fans know Johnson wasn’t just another name on the roster. He was the spark off the bench, the guy who could heat up in a hurry and knock down shots with that signature Butta-smooth stroke. After coming over from UAB last spring, he carved out a real role in Brad Brownell’s rotation, suiting up for all 35 games and earning nine starts this past season.

A Reliable Veteran Presence

Losing Johnson isn’t just about the stats—it’s about the leadership and swagger he brought to the locker room. He was always in the ear of young guns like Ace Buckner and Zac Foster, showing them what it means to wear the Paw. And when it mattered most, Butta delivered, hitting double figures in three of Clemson’s last five games, including a tough-as-nails 11 points in that heartbreaker against Iowa to close out the season.

Johnson finished the year averaging 6.3 points and 2.0 boards, and he knocked down 35.5 percent of his threes. When the Tigers needed a steady hand and a shooter who wouldn’t blink under pressure, Brownell knew he could trust Butta to deliver.

The Eligibility Question

What’s next for Johnson? That’s anybody’s guess. He’s already logged heavy minutes every year, so under the old rules, his clock would be up. But with college hoops changing fast and fifth years becoming more common, Butta is hoping for one last shot to show what he can do on the big stage.

Clemson fans know all too well how tough the waiver game can be. Just last year, Jaeden Zackery and Ian Schieffelin both came up empty on their bids. Schieffelin even made headlines by trading his basketball jersey for a spot on the Clemson football team after his eligibility ran out.

With Butta gone, the Tigers’ backcourt suddenly looks razor-thin. Right now, Brownell’s only got four guards: Buckner, Foster, and the freshmen Harris Reynolds and Amare James. You can bet the staff will be burning up the phones in the portal hunt these next two weeks, searching for a veteran who can bring some of that Butta-smooth magic back to Littlejohn.
