It has not been smooth sailing for Tait Reynolds this season. Why would it be? The former three-star quarterback prospect out of Greater Phoenix has been tasked with leading the offense of a major Power Four team. While he has done a better job of limiting the turnovers and being more accurate with his throws, he is not just struggling with throwing touchdowns; he has issues with zone reads.
"There's still things you're reading on every single play. I guess that's something I need to improve on and keep getting better," Reynolds said about his struggles with making the right decisions with his zone reads. "Whatever Coach Swinney needs from us and this offense, we're gonna try to execute to the best of our ability." Believe it or not, this is a positive sign toward Reynolds improving this season.
The zone read is as much of a feel play as it is a scanning of the defense. Once the game slows down for him, it should improve. In the meantime, Reynolds must work on his rapport with his teammates in the passing game. Otherwise, he may relinquish his starting job to Christopher Vizzina. If taking the zone reads out of the equation helps him, then so be it. Maybe implement a few more designed runs?
Tait Reynolds on Clemson moving away from zone reads vs. Virginia Tech, if he's struggling with making those reads right now:

Keeping things simple may help unlock Tait Reynolds' untapped potential
Having this level of self-awareness will be key in Reynolds getting the most out of his undeniably raw talent. Unfortunately, Reynolds has hit a bit of a snag midway through his true freshman season. It is partially him being a true freshman, as well as largely being let down by his coaching staff. Reynolds may trust Dabo Swinney, but his coach's unwavering support of Chad Morris has let everyone down.
While moving away from the zone reads as he did versus Virginia Tech could make a reeling offense even more shorthanded, it serves Clemson to get back to the basics on that side of the football more than anything. As it is with anything, if you cannot do the simple things right, how can you do the more difficult things correctly? Football is a game that builds upon itself. It requires a solid foundation.
Because every possession matters for Clemson offensively, that, in turn, magnifies every play. If zone reads are currently problematic for Reynolds, then maybe it is in the team's best interest to not run them? This is not like Reynolds requesting a game plan where he does not throw to the left. Yes, using his legs may be key to unlocking something decent in this team on offense, but it has not happened.
Right now, the biggest key for Reynolds moving forward is to be able to complete passes to his bevy of wide receivers and tight ends in crucial situations. These would obviously include on third down and in the red zone. As the field shrinks and the pressure intensifies, Reynolds must show us what he is made of. This may be a frustrating season, but he has five games to show us he is QB1 come 2027.
Reynolds could get better as the season moves along by virtue of addition by play-call subtraction.
