Christopher Vizzina should be allowed to earn his starting job back from Tait Reynolds

There should not be any separation between Tait Reynolds and Christopher Vizzina at this point.

At some point, we have to ask ourselves if this is even a fair fight anymore at Clemson. Christopher Vizzina has been healthy enough to play the last two weeks, but has yet to see the field. Meanwhile, Tait Reynolds continues to run the meager Clemson offense like the true freshman that he is. This has caused Clemson to have the worst passing offense anyone has seen since the 2023 Iowa Hawkeyes.

"We thought we'd have both of those guys, and it'd be a little bit more of a process as we went along," Dabo Swinney said about the quarterback competition between Reynolds and Vizzina. "We'll see. But Tait's our starter. He's earned that." What exactly has Reynolds earned? He might have been such a promising player at some point, but he has not thrown a single touchdown pass in over a month now!

While Reynolds offers far more mobility than Vizzina (164 rushing yards to four), completes a higher percentage of his passes (66.7 percent to 60.9), and has a better yards-per-passing-attempt average (6.1 to 4.4), only 0.56 percent of his throws have been for touchdowns. Vizzina is exponentially better in that department at a respectable 4.35 percent. That is not everything, but it certainly is something.

Dabo Swinney has get Clemson out of this quarterback mess he created

After refusing to add a quarterback in the transfer portal, Swinney doubled down on his wild beliefs so many times that he has completely lost the plot. Whether or not he will admit to having any regrets about how this year's quarterback situation played out, Clemson still has games to win. Not to say that Vizzina gives Clemson its best chance to win, but he should be allowed to compete for the job.

We have to ask ourselves how this kind of messaging is landing with the players. It has landed poorly with the national media and the Clemson Family. To make matters even worse, Swinney and CJ Spiller thought it was a great idea to pull running back Gideon Davidson for the better part of the second half in a gotta-have-it game against Virginia Tech. Why would anyone willingly sign up to play in this mess?

Again, Reynolds may be more talented than Vizzina and have a longer runway than him to get better. That being said, the future is now at Clemson. The Tigers desperately need to get their collective stuff together in the final five weeks of the regular season, or things could get quite ugly. Regardless, Swinney is actively diminishing the talent of everyone on this Clemson by trotting Reynolds out there.

While the season is already lost, there is still positive momentum to be gained. Clemson will likely miss out on a 10-win season for the second year in a row. However, would it not serve Swinney to position his team to have its best shot at success next year? You have to breed confidence into this offense in some way, shape, or form. Reynolds has not done enough to enter next year as the starter.

At the very least, Swinney owes his Clemson players and coaches a much better offensive product.
