Move over, Etienne: ESPN names the one transfer who will restore Clemson’s dynasty

Clemson's offense has been missing a home-run hitter since Travis Etienne Jr. left for the league.

For two seasons, the Clemson offense has been a Ferrari mired in a school zone. The Tigers haven’t had that “blink-and-you-miss-him” sort of playmaker who makes a routine check-down into a 70-yard house call. Well, Dabo Swinney went to the grocery store — the Transfer Portal, as it were — and he didn’t just come back with bread and milk. He returned with Chris Johnson Jr.

ESPN recently named the “most important newcomer” for every ACC team, and for Clemson, it was a no-brainer. A transfer from SMU, Johnson is not just some depth piece; he’s the nitro-boost the offense has long called for, since Travis Etienne Jr. hung that orange jersey.

That Etienne-Sized Hole Has Finally been Filled.

Be honest: Clemson’s ground game has been “fine,” but “fine” doesn’t win the ACC anymore. With Adam Randall off to the National Football League and the quarterback run game offering no fear against opposing coordinators — Cade Klubnik only averaged a measly 1.1 yards per carry last fall — the Tigers needed a game-breaker.

ESPN was blunt about why Johnson is the missing piece:
“The Tigers haven’t had a full blown all-purpose back since Travis Etienne Jr. So you’re calling for someone to turn runs and short throws that we all know are routine into explosives. That’s Johnson.”

Johnson is no longer just “football fast” — he’s “Olympic fast.” We’re talking about a man who captured Florida’s 3A state titles as well in the 100m (10.45) and 200m (20.78). When he hits the edge, pursuit angles for ACC linebackers are going to look hilarious.

If You Can't Beat 'Em, Sign 'Em.

Tiger fans might remember last October when Johnson helped SMU walk into Death Valley and pull off a 35-24 victory. In that game, Johnson dissected the Clemson defense for almost 100 total yards and a touchdown. That is the ultimate “if you can’t beat ’em, recruit ’em” move by Dabo. Johnson’s 2025 tape at SMU is a master class in efficiency, averaging 7.1 yards per carry and over 10 yards per catch. He’s a nightmare in space and that is precisely where Chad Morris wants him.

Chad Morris "Swiss Army Knife"

Chad Morris is back in town to deliver the “ugly” intensity, but he also knows how to work the thoroughbred. He is already comparing Johnson to the likes of C.J. Spiller and Miami’s Malachi Toney. Morris intends to move Johnson all over the formation—slot, wide, backfield—to make sure he’s a “security blanket” for likely starter Christopher Vizzina.

“Morris is surely going to feed Johnson in every way he can,” ESPN wrote. “Just ask him to line up all over the formation… and rapidly become a security blanket for a young quarterback.”

On the 2026 turf where Vegas has the Tigers at a disrespectful 7.5 win total, Johnson is the wildcard who could blow those projections out of the water. If he’s 80% of what Spiller was, the ACC throne may not be as empty as Miami believes.
