After scoring 38 unanswered points in Florida State's demolition of Virginia in Tallahassee last week, Mike Norvell was back doing what he does best by losing every true road game imaginable. Despite taking a 14-0 lead over the three-loss Louisville Cardinals on the road, Norvell's Seminoles somehow found a way to lose its latest conference road game on Friday night, 44-20. It was a total referendum.
This is Florida State's 13th consecutive road loss under Norvell. Florida State's last true road win came on Nov. 25, 2023 in the Sunshine Showdown at Florida in Gainesville. The Seminoles would go on to win the ACC that year with a 13-0 mark before getting blown out by Georgia in the Orange Bowl after missing out on the College Football Playoff. Bobby Bowden only lost 12 road games in 14 years.
What this tells us from a purely Clemson perspective is there is a strong possibility that Norvell will not be coaching the 'Noles on Halloween when the Tigers come to town in three weeks. Florida State has another road game at massive in-state rival Miami next weekend. After that, the Seminoles will be on a bye. Clemson will be coming off its home date with Virginia Tech, but it should not really matter.

Mike Norvell might not make it to Clemson game with current road trend
This first ACC game of the weekend told us two things. Louisville may not be as bad as we thought. More importantly, Norvell's days leading the Seminoles are numbered. Assuming the dollars and cents make sense, he could be out of a job before the end of the month, possibly within the coming days. The Miami road game may give Norvell another week, but he might not get to face Clemson.
Throughout most of the season, Florida State has been seen as a bottom-feeder in the ACC. While the home blowout of Virginia definitely caught everyone off-guard, this is clearly one of the four worst teams in a down ACC by a considerable margin. Georgia Tech might be worse. The same principle applies to Stanford, maybe Cal, but that is about it. Right now, Florida State keeps circling the drain.
As for what this means for Clemson, it certainly increases the Tigers' chances of pulling off a road win at a rival's place in Tallahassee. Had it been held at Death Valley, we might be able to pencil in another W for Clemson for the time being. While the Florida State game looks considerably more manageable after Friday night, Clemson needs to find a way to win this game on the road, with or without Norvell.
Right now, there are a handful of teams who can semi-realistically get to Charlotte to face Miami in the ACC Championship Game, and Florida State is not one of them. With Clemson only having one ACC loss on its resume, the pathway to the conference title bout is well within reach. Of course, Clemson cannot stumble at any point the rest of the way. It cannot fall apart like Florida State did.
To leave Norvell's chances of coaching against Clemson to that of a coin flip might be too optimistic.
