Matt Luke seems way too confident over Clemson's bad offensive line turning it around

Matt Luke's offensive line has consistently been a problem from Clemson throughout the season.

Against all odds, Matt Luke remains optimistic about Clemson's offensive line turning it around in the second half. After giving up only 21 sacks over the course of 13 games a season ago, Clemson's front five has surrendered 17 so far in five games, and that is with a dual-threat quarterback of note in Tait Reynolds. While he has not been the most effective runner with the ball, Luke has some work to do.

"There's a vision and an expectation of the way that we all want it to look. That vision didn't come to life on the tape, and that's my job to get them right," Luke said about his struggling Clemson offensive line. "This open date is coming at a good time for us because we're looking for cohesion and guys playing together, but my job is to get those guys playing in a way that we all want them to play."

While Luke wants consistency and cohesion up front, he has yet to get that so far this season. This is partially because Clemson did not do as great of a job as it should have replacing all the talent it lost to the NFL by way of the transfer portal. Clemson might not have the best history of being dominant up front under Dabo Swinney, but it has been a shame to see this unit look so out-of-sorts this often.

Matt Luke should be coaching for his job in the second half of the season

There is really no other way to say this other than Luke's job might be on the line moving forward. It does not matter that his son Harrison is committed to the Tigers as a part of their 2027 class. Luke was hired to be a difference-maker for the Tigers along the offensive line. Prior to coming over to Clemson, Luke had won national championships as a member of Kirby Smart's staff over at Georgia.

Yes, Clemson should use its financial resources to get Luke better players up front. However, this was supposed to be a halfway decent offensive line for the Tigers. Luke said as much in the offseason. Unfortunately for Clemson, this might be the worst unit on the entire roster. Although the defensive line never had that high of a ceiling to begin with, the effort seems to be far better with that group.

While Clemson does need to improve at quarterback and along the defensive line, Luke's offensive line is this team's bottleneck. Any improvement to the front five should provide a lift to the rest of the team. Reynolds will play better as a result of having more time to throw. Gideon Davidson can get his on the ground far more easily. The receivers should get open more often, maybe the tight ends, too?

Simply put, Luke may not have the best ingredients to work with right now. However, that is no excuse for him not to devise a game plan each and every week to get the most out of this unit. We have seen Tom Allen make adjustments on defense to make his side of the ball better. While Rich Bisaccia has been a revelation on special teams, Chad Morris cannot do his job with Luke's guys blocking better.

If Clemson aims to win eight, nine, or even 10 games this year, the offenisve line must come together.
