Make it make sense! After spending the last two years at Ole Miss, former Cleveland Browns tight end Dae'Quan Wright is more than ready to give it the old college try once again. Assuming that he does clear waivers, Wright could reunite with his former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin at LSU for one last college season. Wright's representation of Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln has a deal in the works.

It would be unprecedented for Wright to return to college football after turning pro. While he did go undrafted out of Ole Miss back in the spring, the new 5-in-5 ruling would allow the class of 2022 player out of Perry, Ga. to return to school if he so chooses. If that is the case, LSU would be his third Power Four program after playing for Ole Miss (2024-25) and originally at Virginia Tech (2022-23).
This would mean that Clemson would have to prepare for an NFL player in their Week 1 game at LSU now.
Dae'Quan Wright committing to LSU puts Clemson in a bad spot
It may be legal for Wright to come back to the SEC, but that doesn't make it ethical. As was the case with Brendan Sorsby betting on college football games while he was at Indiana, this too feels like a line most college coaches won't cross. Oregon head coach Dan Lanning already spoke his mind on it. With Dabo Swinney being a late bloomer with the transfer portal madness, how can he possibly be in favor of this?
This feels like the epitome of double-dipping. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. It should come as no surprise that Kiffin sees no issues with this whatsoever. After all, he is the one who wanted to keep on coaching Ole Miss in the playoffs, despite having already taken over at Magnolia Bowl rival before last year's postseason began. You can't do that, people! Never change, Lane. Never change...
As far as Swinney is concerned, he not only has to usher in a new starting quarterback, but he must deal with old, unreliable defensive tackle Vic Burley being suspended indefinitely. Truth be told, even though more casual fans than ever will be rooting for little ole Clemson vs. the Bayou Bengals on Sept. 5, Swinney and Co. are going to be up against it in Baton Rouge. It would be a huge upset if they won.
FanDuel Sportsbook has LSU as a whopping 10.5-point home favorite over visiting Clemson. While there is a chance the betting line could move in the lead-up to the game, Wright has to enroll at LSU first. However, his impending addition, combined with Burley being off the team, are two recent blows Swinney's program has suffered in recent days. More so than ever, this team needs to be locked in.
Right now, Swinney might be tasked with fighting LSU with both of his hands tied behind his back. While expecting a UDFA tight end to make a gargantuan impact right away at LSU is a bit rich, it still might be too much for Clemson to handle. The Tigers have so many things to correct after an up-and-down fall camp. Truthfully, they just need to hone in and find some belief in themselves.
