Deshaun Watson, the guy who showed Clemson how to win it all, is reminding everyone that you never, ever count out a Tiger. With the Browns wrapping up minicamp up on Lake Erie, the word is out: Deshaun is the frontrunner to lead Cleveland out of the tunnel as QB1 when Week 1 kicks off.
Even with a quarterback room packed with college stars like Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel, and rookie Taylen Green, it’s Watson’s championship swagger and veteran cool that are setting him apart.

Taking the Reps, Taking Control
While the media fixated on the new faces, Watson just got down to business. Day one, everyone expected Sanders to get his shot with the ones, but it was Deshaun who took the bulk of the reps. By day two, there was no question—Watson was first on the field and owned the workload.
For anyone who watched him light up Death Valley, this is the Deshaun we remember. We saw him in 2020, leading the NFL with 4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns. That same playmaker—the one who took over college football in orange—is still there, and now Cleveland is finally getting a taste.

Silencing the Critics
The AFC North hasn’t exactly rolled out the orange carpet. Since landing in Cleveland, Watson has battled through injuries and suspensions, suiting up for just 19 of 85 possible games. His numbers—3,365 yards and 19 touchdowns in three years—don’t tell the story of the legend we know from Clemson.
"Watson is no longer being judged only by what he did in Houston or what he meant to Clemson or any off-field issues," the reports note. "He is trying to prove he can still be a reliable starting quarterback after injuries, inconsistency, and a crowded Browns quarterback room."
The Summer Grind
There’s still a long road to the opener, and the competition isn’t backing down. Sanders will get his shot, but as summer heats up, Watson has already staked his claim at the top.
He’s right where every quarterback dreams of being, and if Clemson fans know anything, it’s this: when Deshaun Watson gets out front, he never looks back.
