There is no place like home, unless you are Clemson... Death Valley used to be a place where visiting teams would come in, take their L, and get on with their lives. Instead, Clemson has shamelessly let its opponents set up shop to do pretty much whatever they like in their South Carolinian college football cathedral. Shockingly, Clemson is 2-8 in its last 10 home games against Power Four teams.
Two of Clemson's three losses on the season have come at home to Power Four opponents: Saturday night's heartbreaker against Virginia Tech, and the multi-score blowout at the hands of Miami. Dating back to Nov. 2, 2024 when Clemson fell at the hands of Louisville, the only Power Four programs the Tigers have beaten in Death Valley are Florida State last fall and North Carolina in Week 3 this season.
In between losing to Louisville in 2024 and Virginia Tech in Week 8, Clemson has also suffered Power Four home losses to South Carolina (2024), LSU (2025), Syracuse (2025), SMU (2025), Duke (2025), and Miami (2026). This all should fall back poorly on the culture Dabo Swinney is not maintaining. Keep in mind that Clemson won the ACC and made the College Football Playoff back in 2024, too.

Clemson has won two of its last 10 home games versus Power Four teams
At some point, you have to be honest with yourself. When does it stop being a coincidence? Whether it be inconsistent defense, little offensive output, or quarterback stagnation throughout, it all comes back to coaching. Clemson may not be as deep or as talented from a roster perspective as the Tigers were in years past. However, the one constant throughout all this would be their head football coach.
While Swinney's buyout remains rather pricey, what happens if this team fails to reach a bowl game? At 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ACC play, it is no longer a guarantee that Clemson will even go bowling. They have back-to-back road games at Florida State and Syracuse, before hosting Georgia Tech in three weeks. After that, it will be a Friday night kickoff at Duke before hosting South Carolina in Palmetto.
Keep in mind that Syracuse, Georgia Tech, and Duke all beat Clemson a season ago. South Carolina defeated the Tigers two years ago. While Florida State has its own mess of issues, at least Mike Norvell's Seminoles play competitive football at home. Road games remain his biggest bugaboo. While Clemson could conceivably win the rest of its games to finish at 9-3, it could also lose out.
At this time, what happened to Dave Doeren on Saturday evening could be foretelling of what is to come for Swinney if he does not change his ways quickly. Chad Morris needs to be a one-and-done offensive coordinator. Clemson has to add a quarterback in the transfer portal who could honestly challenge -- and almost certainly dethrone -- Tait Reynolds for the starting job. This team is a mess.
When you lose your home-field advantage, that is truly the nail in the coffin of your football program.
