Dabo Swinney takes on the current state of college football

When Dabo Swinney went scorched earth at last weekend’s press conference, he was not attacking Pete Golding and the Ole Miss program. He was attacking the chaotic system that is college football in 2026.

When Dabo Swinney took the podium nearly a week ago, everyone was prepared to hear what he had to say after the Luke Ferrelli situation. Swinney started with some housekeeping stuff centered around his new staff hires before delivering a scathing statement on what transpired.

What went down

Swinney detailed the whole timeline of Ferrelli’s arrival to Clemson, all the way to his departure for Ole Miss. Swinney read text messages with the dates, times, and the names attached.

It was quite the bombshell from Swinney, who was accompanied by athletic director Graham Neff as he did so. Many see this as a pivotal moment for Clemson, college football, and college athletics as a whole.

Much like Greg McElroy said, this is the time for the NCAA to either enforce the rules or turn a blind eye and say tampering is okay.

The Reactions

Many of his peers and others around the sport understand Swinney’s sentiments and agree with him. There are also those out there who have used this as an opportunity to take digs at the fall of his program. Unsurprisingly, much of the disagreement is coming from Ole Miss fans, affiliates, and Paul Finebaum

Each of these people have come to the same conclusion, which is that this is just the latest example of the game passing Swinney by. They feel that the Tigers head coach just continues to be unwilling to catch up with the times. In their eyes, everyone is both a victim and guilty of the same crime.

It’s as if many of them think he is unaware that this issue is happening everywhere. The thing is though, since covering Swinney and his program the last three years it’s become clear that is not at all the case. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

Swinney never attacked the portal the same way as most other coaches, because he’s always known how bad things are.

What’s really being done

Swinney knows that tampering is everywhere. He talked in the press conference about how many other coaches have reached out saying the same thing happened to them.

Swinney has talked every offseason about not wanting to be in bidding wars to collect and retain talent. He wants guys to play for him because they love being part of the Clemson program.

About 5-10 years ago, this is something that would not be scoffed at. However, in the current state of college athletics it seems almost laughable to bring players into the program who love the school and the sport they play more than money and “exposure”.

The thing the Ole Miss faithful and others that oppose Swinney don’t seem to grasp is that the Clemson coach was not attacking the school, team, or even Golding himself. They were just the collateral for messing with his program directly. What Swinney was really going after is the current state of college football.

Dabo Swinney vs college athletics in 2026

It’s been said on almost every network that covers the sport that on the surface, college football looks to be in a great place. The lucrative media contracts, extensive sponsorship deals, and record-setting TV ratings make everything look grand.

But, underneath it all college football is crumbling under the lack of structure the NCAA has around NIL and the transfer portal.

This is something many coaches have spoken about. They claim to want more rules in place for what is allowed and for those rules to be enforced.

The difference between Swinney and everyone else is that he called out a specific situation along with names and a timeline of events. Swinney can do this knowing he hasn’t participated in the same improper dealings as people in other programs.

So, for as much as a segment of the college football fanbase has poked fun at his old school way of doing things, it might be what helps Swinney get his justice. It might also finally bring some structure back to college football.

Most people involved in college athletics today would tell you things have gotten wildly out of hand. If Swinney is able to force some of the chaos to be reigned in, it could put interscholastic sports back in a much better place for the future.
