Listing both quarterbacks as co-starters is certainly a choice. With Dabo Swinney having played both Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds in last weekend's 51-10 loss at LSU, Clemson does not have a starting quarterback coming in; it has two. Both signal-callers were listed as QB1 on Clemson's depth chart ahead of the Georgia Southern game. Swinney wants to keep this ongoing competition private.
“I’m not going to answer any of those things, other than that they’ll both play,” Swinney said about the ongoing quarterback battle between Vizzina and Reynolds ahead of Week 2. “The team ain’t worried about it. The team’s just trying to focus on what they’ve got to do. They’re going to play for whoever runs out there. They all know the situation: that the guys are competing. But they’ll both play.”
The Clemson co-starters completed 14-of-22 passes for 105 yards and an interception in Week 1's loss at LSU. Vizzina was 10-of-16 for 83 yards and the pick, while Reynolds went 4-for-6 for only 22 yards. Even if nine different players caught passes from either Vizzina or Reynolds, nothing they did inspired any confidence moving forward. Swinney keeping this competition open shall do the same.

Ongoing QB battle between Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds creates more uncertainty for Tigers
While it does serve Swinney and the rest of the Clemson program to play both co-starters in this game, the Tigers cannot be this unsure at the quarterback position entering ACC play. Clemson will host North Carolina next Saturday afternoon to kick off league play for them. UNC looked so much better under Bill Belichick this year than last. It is why Vic Burley's return cannot come soon enough.
Even if Reynolds is the more talented quarterback for Clemson, Vizzina has to show us something during what will likely be his third career start for the Tigers. We are not asking him to be the reason this team wins games, but he cannot shrink under the bright lights again as he did versus LSU. In time, Reynolds should usurp him on the depth chart. Right now, he is neck-and-neck with Vizzina.
With Swinney refusing to have one player listed as the clear starter over the other, all it does is create more confusion internally. If he had just picked Vizzina, then we would not be asking ourselves these questions two days out from the game. Who is going to lead this team out of the tunnel? Does it even matter? Regardless, Clemson is completely devoid of confidence after last week's showing at LSU.
Simply put, Clemson needs to make this layup of a game put in front of them. Georgia Southern may have a proud football history, but the Eagles are not on the same level as Clemson. An upset loss at home to Clay Helton's team may drive another nail into the coffin of Swinney's Clemson tenure. All the pressure is on the Tigers not to screw this one up. It all starts with some competent quarterback play.
We can only hope this ongoing quarterback battle reaches its conclusion after both play on Saturday.
