Simply put, Clemson has to take advantage of its next opportunity. Fortunately for Dabo Swinney's Tigers, the chance at a get-right game is standing right in front of them. Following its abysmal Week 1 showing at LSU, Clemson will welcome Georgia Southern in its home opener during Week 2. While Clay Helton's team may have shut out Charleston Southern in Week 1, Clemson should win this easily.
Per the FanDuel Sportsbook, Clemson has opened as a 20.5-point home favorite over Georgia Southern. The associated moneylines for this game are Clemson -1800 and Georgia Southern +920. This means you would need to bet $1,800 on Clemson to win $100, while a $100 bet on Georgia Southern would net you $920. The Tigers being a multi-score favorite over the Eagles is quite telling.
As far as the over/under is concerned, this game is projected to have a combined 55.5 points. From the looks of it, we can expect for Saturday night's game to be slightly lower scoring than the 61 points put up between Clemson and LSU. Based on the point spread and the over/under, a projected final score coming into this game could be something in the range of Clemson 38, Georgia Southern 17.5.
Clemson opens as a massive 20.5-point favorite over Georgia Southern
With this being one of two non-Power Four opponents on Clemson's schedule this season, we better hope the Tigers take advantage. Georgia Southern may have a proud football history, but this game is as much of a shoo-in for Clemson as any left on the schedule. Any troubles that emerge from this one may only be magnified within the context of ACC play. Clemson will host North Carolina in Week 3.
What Clemson needs to do is establish what kind of offense and defense it wants to play with throughout ACC play. In short, the Tigers need to use this one as a bit of a warmup game. We all know that they were thrown into the fire versus LSU last week. Depending on what we see out of Miami here in a month, the Bayou Bengals may end up being the best team Clemson will end up facing all season.
Given that Chad Morris wants to run the football around 40 times a game, that would be a good start for this team. Matt Luke was supposed to have one of the better offensive lines in recent Clemson history. Instead, we have players like Brayden Jacobs looking like lost puppies out there when going up against the LSU pass rush. Running the ball well and stopping the run will be critical for Clemson.
Even if Clemson opened up as a three-touchdown favorite over Georgia Southern, none of that is going to matter if the Tigers lose control of the narrative early like they did against LSU. Outside of drawing Charleston Southern out of the FCS later on, Clemson will not face a team it has such a great talent advantage over this year than Georgia Southern. This is why the point spread is so sizable.
Unless Clemson turns the football over at will, the Tigers should be able to start the year out at 1-1.
