Concerns about Thursday's scrimmage be damned. Matt Luke has this year's Clemson offensive line firing on all cylinders. While it took a little longer than expected, Luke's position group is rounding into form ahead of Year 3 for him on this staff. The former Ole Miss head coach and Georgia offensive line coach has brought with him a fiery passion for being competitive in the trenches.
Dabo Swinney went as far as to praise how special that unit can be. "I think that first group has been really good," Swinney said. "I think we have some alphas in that group. They’ve really impressed me.” A great offensive line would be a tremendous boost to the entire team. It can help unlock its new starting quarterback's potential, as well as make things easier for new coordinator Chad Morris.
Dabo Swinney has been very pleased with Clemson’s first team OL:

In the past, Clemson was defined by having elite defensive line play, but suspect protection from its front five. Now, the tables have turned. Swinney believes he can lean on his offensive line, while also hoping that an alpha emerges in the trenches defensively. Being able to win along the line of scrimmage will be so critical for this team, whether it is to win games or, better yet, close them out...
Once again, having a former Power Four head coach on staff is paying out in dividends for Swinney.
Matt Luke appears to have his best offenisve line to date at Clemson
While offensive lines are largely defined as a collective, Luke has the pieces in place to dictate terms up front. Two Deep has these five players projected as starters for Clemson in the trenches: Left tackle Brayden Jacobs, left guard Elyjah Thurmon, center Harris Sewell, right guard Ronan O'Connell, and right tackle Easton Ware. Seniors Collin Sadler and Chapman Pendergrass provide more depth.
For years, Clemson had to get the ball out quickly to offset not having the most well-developed offensive line. Even when this program was at the peak of its powers under Swinney, offensive line play often brought up the rear. Thankfully, that no longer looks to be the case. With Morris coming back to lead the offense, this team might be able to play uptempo and with tremendous conviction.
Jacobs mentioned this as much when speaking about how much fun it is to play in this offense.
"I think this offense is a really special thing," Jacobs said. "If all 11 guys give all their effort, even if some guy messes up, we have something for it. The play may not get as far as it’s supposed to go, but his offense is so special. It has definitely changed the way our mindsets have been going into fall.”
Whether it be Christopher Vizzina or Tait Reynolds leading this team out of the tunnel on Sept. 5 vs. LSU, it may be more important for how Jacobs and the rest of this offensive line come together. They will play their part in keeping this offense on schedule. By opening up lanes for Gideon Davidson to sprint through, or giving the quarterback more time to throw, it will all be to the benefit of Clemson.
Having a strong offensive line might always be important, but it may never be more true for the Tigers than this year. While linebacker Sammy Brown and cornerback Ashton Hampton marvel at their respective positions, Tom Allen's defense is far from a finished product. However, even if this team struggles in run defense, at least Clemson has the offensive line it can trust to counterbalance that.
Either way, Swinney being this complimentary of the offensive line must make the fanbase feel good.
