So much for ending things on a high note... As Clemson's fall camp winds down, Dabo Swinney was less than pleased with what he saw during the Tigers' second and final scrimmage. He said it was the "worst practice" of the summer. Swinney firmly believed that there were too many "stupid penalties" and some players got "exposed" in some instances due to Clemson's overall lack of depth.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney, speaking after tonight's second and final scrimmage, says it was the team's "worst practice" of 2026 fall camp. Too many "stupid penalties" and some players got baptized and "exposed," but that's partially because they sat/limited lots of starters

While there were some highlights from the scrimmage, quarterback play was not among them. Between Christopher Vizzina, Tait Reynolds, and any of the other backups, Swinney "didn't think any of them were very good," as "nobody was good enough to win [the day]." Clemson was always going to usher in a new quarterback for this season, but this is not what anybody wanted to hear right now.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney's assessment of the quarterback play in tonight's scrimmage: "I didn't think any of them were very good today ... nobody was good enough to win today." All the QBs, including Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds, played. Just no standouts

Although it looked like Vizzina was starting to separate from Reynolds for the starting quarterback job, that might not be entirely the case. Clearly, Swinney wants to motivate key players like Vizzina to step up and take ownership. He is occasionally doing that, but maybe not to the degree that Swinney wants. Regardless, how Clemson's scrimmage on Thursday went has left people feeling uneasy.
Dabo Swinney's final Clemson scrimmage thoughts don't inspire hope ahead of LSU
Where it stands now, Clemson has two ranked teams on its schedule and is not expected to beat either. While it does get the Miami Hurricanes at home in a little over a month, the upcoming road date at LSU looms large. It may be Lane Kiffin's first season in charge, but he is expected to do big things right away in Baton Rouge. Clemson is a sizable underdog coming into its big Week 1 game, with the line favoring LSU by more than 10 points, per FanDuel Sportsbook.
Although Clemson should have at least a puncher's chance of winning at LSU, these are the types of comments from Swinney that the national media loves to stew over. It was not that long ago that Pat McAfee contemplated whether Clemson was going to get 50-burgered in Baton Rouge. Either way, all the built-up equity Swinney and his staff have accumulated over the offseason has gone out the window.
In a way, what Swinney said to the media after Thursday night's practice could have been done to soften any potential blow Clemson might experience in Baton Rouge on Sept. 5. Even if that is the case, wouldn't we all rather hear more positive things coming out of the latter stages of fall camp? Swinney said a few glowing comments about some parts of his team, but the bad remarks stick out.
Right now, we have to wonder if this team will develop the necessary grit to come out of this trying campaign alive. While Clemson's stock has been depreciated in recent years, this is still a team that can get to Charlotte, win the ACC, and make the College Football Playoff. However, the way this team looks in Week 1 at LSU could go a long way in how Clemson's narrative will be shaped for this season.
We wanted to be optimistic coming in, but Swinney speaking off the cuff like this removed all doubt.
