Dabo Swinney needed just one great game from Tait Reynolds to swear off the QB portal

We must give credit where it is due, but Dabo Swinney is getting a little bit ahead of himself again.

It only took six starts for Tait Reynolds to look like something potentially special at quarterback. After not throwing for a touchdown in over a month, Reynolds not only threw for two, but he took another in himself from a ridiculous 79 yards out! His best game of the season was what was required of him in a gotta-have-it game for the Tigers. Needless to say, Dabo Swinney could not be more convinced.

"He ain't gonna get worse. He doesn't have good talent. He's got elite talent," Swinney said about his true freshman star quarterback before going into extreme quarterbacking hyperbole. "I'm not saying he's Joe Montana ... but we're gonna have him for more than one year. We're gonna build around him." Yes, Reynolds had a great game, but his first five starts were nothing to write home about previously.

This commentary from Swinney only goes to show that it will be next to impossible to convince him that Clemson should at least look in the transfer portal for a quarterback. Not to say that a broken clock is right twice a day, but Clemson is not in the playoff mix in November because of how meager the offense has been with Reynolds at the helm. He will get better, but it certainly took a minute.

Tait Reynolds needs to prove Dabo Swinney right the rest of the season

Through the first eight games of his college career, Reynolds has completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 1,285 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. He also had 94 carries for 249 yards and two touchdowns. While that season-long stat line is certainly passable, keep in mind that the bulk of his production just came against a rival team that just fired its head coach after losing to it.

While Reynolds only completed 56.3 percent of his passes (18-for-32) against the lackluster Florida State defense for 189 yards, two touchdowns, and no picks, it was enough to get it done against the Seminoles. Yes, his 14 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown helped put the Tigers over the edge, but there was still a lot of average between a handful of great plays. At least he had some great plays...

What is important to understand here is that football is a week-to-week proposition. Just because you play well one week does not guarantee you will do the same in another. While Reynolds has not truly had a stinker of a performance yet, even the best Power Four quarterbacks will have them on occasion. Fortunately, Clemson does have two winnable games coming up to find some momentum.

If Reynolds plays well against Syracuse and Georgia Tech, Clemson could be playing with a ton of confidence heading into the Friday night kick at Duke in a few weeks. After that, it will be the Palmetto Bowl versus a red-hot South Carolina team. While Syracuse and Georgia Tech will surely give it their all against Clemson, we should expect Duke and South Carolina to be a big step up in competition.

As long as Reynolds continues to prove Swinney right, he will never have to look in the portal again!
