Football is the epitome of a "What have you done for me lately?" sport. That has never been more true at a place like Clemson. For years, winning 10-plus games was the expectation. Last season saw the Tigers go a dreadful 7-6. This has sparked a change in head coach Dabo Swinney, one where he is trying to eradicate his program of the rampant entitlement running through it. A bunch of nobodies.
Yes, Swinney called this year's Clemson team "a bunch of nobodies" in the early stages of fall camp. He has refused to name anyone a starter just yet, hoping this will incentivize key players on his underperforming roster to rise to the occasion.
"Everybody's just working," Swinney said. "There's a bunch of nobodies. We'll see. We'll see if anybody becomes somebody as we play some games."

This feels like a breath of fresh air coming out of the Clemson program. The Tigers have gotten stale in a post-COVID world. Quarterbacks like Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence are not walking through that door. Instead, Swinney and his staff need to count on homegrown players like Christopher Vizzina to thrive and become the leaders they were meant to be.
How players like Vizzina and SMU transfer Chris Johnson Jr. handle Swinney's criticisms will go a long way toward this decadent program righting the ship. The talent is there, but maybe not to the degree it should be. This team needs to lean on each other and be their brother's keeper. Since everyone largely reacts to failure in the same way, this "bunch of nobodies" now has a rallying cry.
Swinney may receive a ton of flak for his antics, but he knows exactly what he is doing here by needling his players. This has a chance to work out tremendously for this year's Tigers. They could potentially be the most likable Clemson team in an exceedingly long time. It starts by processing what Swinney is saying and using it as intrinsic motivation.

It may be an old trick in the playbook, but it is an effective one. By labeling himself as everyone's common enemy on this team, the players can all come together for the greater good. Nobody is better than anyone anymore. It does not matter if you are on any awards watch lists or are a glorified tackling dummy masquerading as a walk-on. Clemson has to get back to the basics to win big again.
The best part about this quote coming from Swinney is that it keeps the messaging consistent within the entire program. When Clemson is at its best under Swinney, the Tigers embody every bit of the "us vs. them" mentality. Not every program is built for this, but Clemson is... They have the right kind of internal kindling to rebuild that fire burning deep inside them.
While Swinney may have no interest in retiring, he too has to reinvent himself. He must also confront his own variation of entitlement head-on, the one eating away at his legacy. Stubbornness is no longer going to cut it. Just because he was great a few years ago doesn't mean he is anymore. It starts with him being honest with himself.
Instead of shooting the messenger, let's hear what he has to say. A "bunch of nobodies" can do something extraordinary, as long as they believe in themselves and have each other's backs.
This is a formula that will serve Clemson. It may not result in an ACC Championship or even a College Football Playoff appearance this season, but it will make for a better football team.
Clemson fans, players, and staff are looking to Swinney for guidance, and he just delivered them gospel in a big way.
