Good things come to those who wait. For Christopher Vizzina, waiting has been the hardest part of his college career. Vizzina could have started elsewhere sooner, but he fully bought into what Clemson football is all about.
In a way, Vizzina is the ultimate throwback player for Clemson. This was an attribute that ESPN's Adam Rittenberg touched on in his recent top quarterback intel article. By biding his time behind a proven starter in Cade Klubnik, Vizzina seems far more mature than his minimal in-game experience suggests.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke glowingly about what all Vizzina brings to the table too.
"He does everything well," Swinney said. "He's really smart, he's a good passer ... he's an excellent leader, he moves well. He's not quite as fast as Cade, but he's an athletic, big, strong kid that can finish runs. He's got some savvy and natural instincts in the pocket that I think is just natural to him."
Swinney went a step further by saying we would be talking about more Vizzina if he transferred away.
“Whoever got him [if Vizzina had entered the portal], they’d be writing all these great articles about this great quarterback that we got from Clemson,” Swinney said. “But because he stayed, he gets downplayed. That’s just the nature of this world we’re living in right now. It just is.”
While many top recruits run to the transfer portal at the first sign of adversity, Vizzina chose to hunker down and bet on himself. Of course, he still has to beat out Tait Reynolds for the Clemson starting job.
The battle for the QB1 may be closer than expected, but this mental edge Vizzina has forged over the last three years could serve him and Clemson in the end. Swinney is not going to hand the starting quarterback role to just anyone. He may prefer to give it to someone he knows and trusts. This goes hand in hand with how an ACC front office executive feels about Vizzina's standing within the Clemson program.
"He's been there for a minute now, and he's done a good job of playing behind Cade and learning from him," an anonymous ACC personnel chief told Rittenberg. "They're smart with how they develop their players, and I think he has always been talented. But the jury's out on him."
We will know soon enough if Vizzina has it or not. But, above all else, we have seen firsthand in the 12-team College Football Playoff era that veteran teams tend to go further in the tournament than developing programs. This is why we should not rule out Clemson making a return trip to the playoffs this postseason.

Christopher Vizzina's maturity could unlock Clemson's path into playoffs
In theory, Vizzina should beat out Reynolds for the right to replace Klubnik as the next Clemson starting quarterback. If Vizzina widens the gap between now and the start of the season, then that bodes exceedingly well for the Tigers. Should Reynolds close the gap, then that could be problematic.
Essentially, Swinney needs to figure out what matters more for Clemson at quarterback for this season. Does he want a potentially steadier hand in Vizzina, or possibly a less refined, higher-upside player in Reynolds? With him feeling some degree of pressure entering this season, Swinney will likely side with Vizzina for the time being.
Again, there is so much for Reynolds to learn. He is only a freshman. The last three years Vizzina has spent backing up Klubnik could come in handy. The ACC could send multiple teams to the playoffs, but that will require someone other than Miami winning the conference title bout. Clemson has a real shot at that, especially with Vizzina rounding into form.
The Tigers will not play fellow ACC contenders Louisville or SMU this season. That bodes well for Clemson's chances of getting back to Charlotte. Vizzina may not be the most exciting quarterback in college football, but he may be exactly who Clemson needs at this time.
Over the last two years, we have seen upperclassmen quarterbacks handle their playoff situations better than freshmen or sophomores. Some transferred to their final destination, while others did not. Vizzina should take a page out of what worked for the likes of Will Howard, Riley Leonard, and Fernando Mendoza. Their maturity played a big part in all of them getting to a national championship.
Right now, Clemson needs to reclaim what is theirs and then some. To do that, the Tigers need to rally around the guys who have been in the building for the long haul. Vizzina has seen so much, which is why his leadership could resonate within the building more than anyone else.
Instead of relying on the microwave, Clemson chooses to use all of its available tools in the kitchen to make the best food it can with its many ingredients. While the Tigers may not be getting the most out of their ingredients anymore, there is still some method to the madness in Chef Swinney's kitchen.
Simply, Vizzina has been afforded enough time to age and marinate at Clemson. However, it will be up to him alone to make sure the end product is appetizing.
