Dabo Swinney knows exactly what he is doing. It worked out well for him for so long, so why mix it up? Well, in the wonderful world of NIL, other teams are going to move heaven and earth to get their guys. When it comes to Clemson, they too have adapted to some of the larger wholesale changes affecting the sport. Thankfully, the Clemson Tigers have done some stellar work on the recruiting trail recently.
ESPN's Eli Lederman placed Clemson into the fifth group of his commitment season tiers. Tier 5 is defined as "flying under the radar." Heading into the final week of July, Clemson has the No. 13 class in the country, with some 20 commitments/pledges for the 2027 class. This includes the crown jewel of its class up to this point, quarterback Kharim Hughley. He has been committed for over a year now.
Lederman also mentioned four-star wide receiver Jamarin Simmons, running back Gary Walker, and offensive tackle JJ Brown by name as guys who have signed up for the Clemson cause in recent months. He also touched on how defensive players such as Desmond Malpress, Jayden Aparicio-Bailey, and Seth Tillman could all be major contributors from this class for Clemson in the near future.
Georgia Tech, Nebraska, Ole Miss, and Virginia Tech were also placed into Tier 5 by Lederman as well.
Dabo Swinney continues to recruit his kind of players over to Clemson
Swinney has his critics, Paul Finebaum being chief among them. However, Swinney has shown not all that long ago you can contend for national championships by recruiting your type of guys into your program. Yes, it helped that many of the guys who fit in perfectly with the Clemson family were former five-star recruits. That being said, Clemson football has always been greater than the sum of its parts.
While a case can be made for Clemson being a legitimate national contender, more and more of Swinney's kind of guys need to hit. The good news is Swinney and his coaching staff still attract players who can help them contend for ACC championships. The bad news is that may not be good enough. 2018 was nearly a decade ago. Clemson has only reached the playoffs once since COVID.
What is important to understand here is Clemson needs to do everything in its power to get the most out of what it has. This has to include Christopher Vizzina dazzling in his first season as the starting quarterback. It helps that he might have one of the best receiving corps in football. Frankly, Clemson has a chance to silence some of its critics this year, as long as Vizzina plays better than Cade Klubnik.

To tie a bow on this, Clemson fans should be pleased with the job Swinney and his staff have done of late on the recruiting trail. To have a top-15 class heading into August should be good enough for Clemson to maintain its playoff viability. However, we do have to ask ourselves if that is even good enough anymore. Swinney is royalty, but rent is due every month. Clemson has to collect its funds.
For now, Clemson's overachievement in recruitment has only been set up by its muted expectations.
