Dabo Swinney's biggest underdog role so far is an ideal spot to flip Clemson's script

There is a first time for everything. While Dabo Swinney has been an institution at Clemson for nearly two decades, he is not at his best as a double-digit underdog. Not only is the 16.5 points Clemson is getting at home the most Swinney has ever received in a game before, but he has lost all five of his previous matchups where Clemson was slated to lose by 10 or more points. Why not flip the script?

No doubt about it, this is truly David versus Goliath in ACC play on Saturday night. All Swinney has got is his slingshot... The good news is nobody outside of the Clemson family expects for the Tigers to prevail. While the Hurricanes may be laying way too many points, they could still win by one, and that would be totally okay for Mario Cristobal. His team seems to be on a collision course for the playoffs.

Admittedly, Cristobal may be a tad nervous about playing against an ascending Clemson team like this one. However, the Hurricanes have a Heisman hopeful at quarterback in Darian Mensah, while Tait Reynolds will only be making his third career start for Clemson. In time, he might become as good as Mensah, if not better. Unfortunately, Miami's quarterbacking advantage could make all the difference.

Dabo Swinney must show everyone why he is a future hall-of-fame coach

For Clemson to win this game, the Tigers must hand the ball off to Gideon Davidson a ton and lean on Tom Allen's rapidly improving defense. Reynolds seems to be well aware of this overall game-planning philosophy. While he may he asked to make a big play or two, he knows he does not have to be a hero. As far as Swinney is concerned, he will have to show everyone why he is a future hall-of-fame coach.

Over the course of the season, Clemson has become quite the second-half team. The Tigers made great adjustments out of halftime to beat Georgia Southern, North Carolina, and Cal in succession. This is a testament to Swinney conveying the necessary messages to his players and staff to get the most out of his team when it counts. It may not be enough to beat Miami, but it can make a difference.

With what Swinney's team has had to endure so far, the Tigers are far more uncomfortable being uncomfortable than Miami coming in. This is not to say Miami is ill-equipped to address any adversity the Hurricanes may face this season. It just tells us that Clemson has had plenty of practice reps at it coming in. In a way, these reps could count if Clemson were to pull off the huge upset win over Miami.

Right now, as long as Swinney remains calm, cool, and collected about this big opportunity ahead of him, his team may follow suit. That is what it will take for Clemson to do the unthinkable, or provide Swinney with his most impressive regular-season win to date. He has a chance to flip the script of Clemson's season. Take it one play at a time. The ACC might be more wide open than we imagined.

Swinney does not need to exorcise any demons in this one; he only needs to win a football game.
