Always be 'crootin'. That is the name of the game in major college athletics. While the Clemson Tigers have always done things differently under Dabo Swinney, they continue to land marquee prospects from all over the country. Midway through last week, Clemson logged an expert prediction from a recruiting analyst for the 2028 cycle. Clemson fans cannot wait to see who the first commit could be.
On Wednesday night, Rivals' Sam Spiegelman put his name on the line with Trey Wright of coming to Clemson. Spiegelman has the three-star quarterback from Frisco, Texas projected to go to the Tigers with 65-percent confidence. In his career as a football recruiting analyst, Spiegelman hits on about 85 percent of his predictions. It is not a certainty that Wright will end up at Clemson, but it seems likely.
According to the 247Sports Composite, Wright is the No. 45 player from Texas, the No. 28 quarterback in the country, and the No. 369 overall prospect in the 2027 recruiting class. He has 27 official offers, including ones from Baylor, Houston, Michigan, and Oregon. His primary recruiter to Clemson is Chad Morris with Tajh Boyd serving as his secondary. Clemson offered Wright on June 21.
If Wright does commit to the Tigers, he will be the first player to sign up to play for Clemson in 2028.
Clemson Tigers are on the precipice of landing QB Trey Wright for 2028
While Clemson has done surprisingly well on the recruiting trail so far this summer, the job is not yet finished. There is work to be done to get the 2027 class in an even better position, as well as laying the foundation for what the 2028 class could all be about. Even though some fans may not be over the moon with the amount of stars next to Wright's name, a Clemson offer could bring him another.
What we have to remember is a Clemson offer still carries weight. It is one of the bigger and better schools who have extended ones to Wright so far in his recruitment. The fact that Morris and Boyd are all-in on him speaks volumes. Swinney may be the quintessential CEO-type as a head coach, but he too favors the offensive side of the ball. He is a former wide receiver who likes to open it up a bit.
Right now, we are talking about a rising junior choosing to commit to a school a full year before most of his peers would even start to think about. it. College athletes might be picking their schools of choice sooner and sooner with each passing year, but did you end up going to the school you were all about at 16 heading into your junior year? Clemson may be perfect for Wright, but a lot could change.

Overall, we have to be excited about the first potential domino of 2028 to fall for Clemson. The fact Spiegelman was willing to put his name and reputation out there as a recruiting specialist should have Clemson fans giddy. More importantly, just because Wright is only a three-star now does not mean he will remain one. Keep in mind Wright will have two more seasons worth of high school football to play.
Clemson identifying a quarterback this early into the 2028 cycle shows it prioritizes this key position.
