Clemson vs. North Carolina lightning delay: When will play resume for Week 3 contest?

Death, taxes, and the 2026 Clemson Tigers being in a weather delay. With 8:11 left in the game down 17-15 with the North Carolina Tar Heels driving deep in Clemson territory, both teams had to head to the locker room because of lightning in the area. Dabo Swinney was beside himself, and could not believe this was happening to his team for the third week in a row. At least it is in the mid-afternoon.

North Carolina had the ball in the red zone with Demon June having run the ball well on this crucial drive after fumbling previously. Prior to this moment, Clemson had scored 12 unanswered points on the Tar Heels' defense, including Tait Reynolds' first career touchdown pass. As expected, this game has been a defensive struggle with North Carolina being sharper on the offensive side of the football.

With this game hanging in the balances, Swinney can't afford to let this one slip away from him at all.

How do lightning delays work in college football?

Whenever lightning occurs within an eight-mile radius of a college football stadium, the players have to exit the field and the fans have to leave the stands. The game must be paused for 30 minutes. Once the final strike in the area has occurred, the game can resume, or commence, 30 minutes later. With each subsequent lightning strike, the clock goes back to the 30-minute countdown once again.

With the lightning strike occuring right around 3:00 p.m. ET, Clemson and North Carolina cannot go back onto the field until 3:30 p.m. ET at the earliest. There will be a brief warmup period before the final eight minutes and change of this game could be played. Thus, we are looking at this game being extended well into the 4:00 p.m. ET hour. Once again, this is so much better than playing into Sunday.

A weather update was expected to be given out at 3:30 p.m. ET, but there was not one. With the weather not being anywhere near as bad as it was the last two weeks, fans are wondering why there was even a delay in the first place. With North Carolina deep in Clemson territory, this feels like cruel and unusual punishment for the Tigers. We could have had the game finished by now instead of this.

Shortly before the 4:00 p.m. ET hour, Clemson radio man Don Munson provided some much-needed clarity on the situation. "The latest update we have is that this is going to go to at least 5 o'clock. It's 3:50 pm, so this will go at least another hour and 10 minutes. I hate to tell you that, folks. ... If you're outside, go find shelter." There is quite nothing like getting to spend even more time with this team.

With the lightning delay being extended until 5:00 p.m. ET, the absolute earliest we could see any return to action could be around 5:30 p.m. ET. With the players needing a brief warmup period before finishing the final eight minutes and 11 seconds of play, this game may not be done until the evening.
