Despite giving up a 10-point halftime lead, Clemson pulled out an overtime victory over Pitt, 78-75. The Tigers moved to 6-1 in the ACC and 15-4 overall.
In the first half, Clemson could not miss from deep. Of its 14 baskets, 10 were tres, good enough for 62.5 percent. It wasn't pretty initially, with the Panthers taking an early lead. As well as they shot toward the end of the half, the Tigers couldn't do much in the first nine minutes.
The reason Clemson climbed out of the early hole was the clutch shooting by Chase and Dillion Hunter. The brothers were on fire before halftime, combining for 21 points while knocking down 6/7 from the three-point line.
Before the break, vibes were good, Clemson had the momentum, and Pitt was on the ropes early. However, the Panthers threw a counterpunch with an 18-4 run five minutes into the second half, tying the Tigers with 57 points. Defense was the name of the game in the last eight minutes. Both scored only nine points before the final buzzer sounded.
Suddenly, Clemson went into the extra period on the ropes, and Pitt had all the momentum. The Tigers returned to their early form and knocked down two threes in overtime, with Chancey Wiggins leading the team in points (12) in OT. Although, the Panthers were awakened on the offensive side of the ball, scoring nine, just three points shy of another tie.
Clemson won by the skin of their teeth, but it did enough to dampen Pitt's rally and claim the win. The Tigers will return to Littlejohn Coliseum on Wednesday, January 22, to play Syracuse.
