The South Carolina summer is sweltering, but it still can’t match the buzz around Clemson football right now. On Tuesday, at Clemson’s annual preseason media day, offensive coordinator Chad Morris wasted no time diving into the headline everyone’s talking about: the quarterback showdown between Chris Vizzina and Tait Reynolds.
Morris didn’t hesitate to echo what Dabo made clear back in the spring: Chris Vizzina, known around the facility as "CV," gets the first crack at leading this offense.
"Well, you know, coming out of spring, you know, coach made it clear. I mean, CB is our guy, and he'll start fall camp as the guy," Morris said.
But there’s no time to get comfortable in Death Valley.
Dabo’s mantra is simple: Best is the Standard. No job is handed out on reputation alone at Clemson, and true freshman Tait Reynolds—Morris calls him "Tate"—is making sure Vizzina feels the heat.
Morris pointed out that Reynolds turned heads all spring and is doing everything he can to make this a real battle.
"And but there's also Tate's Tate's right there, and and had a had a really good spring and came on at the end," Morris said. "And I think there's a great competition going on, and I think we've got to have competition in this entire offense at all positions."
Hearing Morris double down on competition across the offense is exactly what Clemson fans want to hear.
Fall Camp Will Separate Pretenders from Contenders
With kickoff inching closer, Morris made it clear both quarterbacks have been grinding all summer. But the real proving ground comes when the pads go on and fall camp cranks up in Tigertown.
Morris outlined the final stretch of the quarterback battle and the overall offense:
"And I think competition makes everybody better, and I think you're going to see that during the torso fall camp. But you know clearly, CV is our guy starting camp out. But they've both had an incredible summer and going to finish up over the next couple weeks, and so we we anticipate it being a great competition, not just in quarterback position, but all positions."
