One of the first transfer portal recruiting battles of the offseason involving Clemson basketball has officially been decided as a top target is headed to an ACC foe.

Valparaiso transfer Cooper Schwieger just took a visit to Clemson over the weekend and now it looks like he's going to be a rival next season.

On Wednesday afternoon, Schwieger committed to Wake Forest.

While this isn't the worst development as Brad Brownell has other targets in his sights, it still hurts because Schwieger would not only be a great fit but he'll have to face the Tigers at least once next season. He averaged 15.8 points and 7.8 rebounds with 2.0 blocks and shot 49 percent from the floor and just a shade under 30 percent from deep.

Wake Forest was flirting with an NCAA Tournament berth all season and had some stumbles along the way, leading to the Demon Deacons missing out.

Adding a guy like Schwieger would definitely help Clemson's roster building and ability to play inside-out and replace guys like Viktor Lakhin, Chauncey Wiggins, and Ian Schieffelin. He has the ability to defend the paint and also play on the wing, scoring from all three levels. On top of that, he's one of the best free throw shooters in the country, making 85 percent from the line.

Brownell is targeting a number of players similar to Schwieger but it felt like he was the most talented guy of the group although Nick Davidson (Nevada) and Carter Welling (Utah Valley) are solid options.

We'll see when Clemson finally lands its first transfer of the offseason -- there are five open roster spots left.
